India: BJP trying to fool country on NRC issue

New Delhi, Dec 22 (PTI) Hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for claiming his government never discussed the National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Congress on Monday alleged that the BJP is trying to fool the country.

The BJP in its Jharkhand assembly election manifesto has claimed it will implement the NRC and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said it will be implemented across the country, but the prime minister is now claiming just the opposite, the Congress said.

India: DMK, allies take out rally against CAA in Chennai

Chennai, Dec 23 (PTI) DMK and its allies on Monday took out a protest rally here against the amendment to the Citizenship Act and seeking its withdrawal.

DMK president M K Stalin along with leaders of allies, including senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, MDMK chief Vaiko and state unit leaders of the Left parties were marching from downtown Egmore towards the Rajarathinam Stadium, a distance of about two km.

India: State Cong leaders meet jailed party workers in Lucknow

Lucknow, Dec 23 (PTI) State Congress leaders on Monday met jailed party worker Sadaf Zafar, arrested during a protest against the amended Citizenship Act, and alleged that she was given worse treatment than "third degree" by the police.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday had demanded the immediate release of Zafar, who was arrested during an anti-CAA protest on December 19.

India: Curfew after protest against CAA/NRC lifted in Jabalpur

Jabalpur, Dec 23 (PTI) Curfew imposed in some areas of Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur city after violence during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was lifted on Monday, a police official said.

The decision was taken after a review of the situation in those areas, Superintendent of Police Amit Singh said.

Curfew was imposed on Friday in four police station areas of Jabalpur after protesters pelted stones, clashed with police and indulged in destruction of property.

India: Students protesting outside UP Bhawan detained

New Delhi, Dec 23 (PTI) As many as 46 students were detained outside the Uttar Pradesh Bhawan here on Monday when they were about to begin a protest against the police's action during anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act demonstrations in the state.

The protesters were demanding the resignation of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the issue.

There are 27 women among those detained.

India: Thousands join 'peace rally' in B'luru against CAA-NRC

Bengaluru, Dec 23 (PTI) Thousands of people from Muslim community on Monday staged a "Peace Rally" here against the Citizenship Amendment Law and proposed National Register of Citizens.

Waving the national flag and holding placards, the protestors raised slogans demanding withdrawal of the NRC and CAA as they marched through city roads.

India: Top Congress leaders sit on 'Satyagraha' at Rajghat

New Delhi, Dec 23 (PTI) Top Congress leaders led by Sonia Gandhi on Monday sat on a 'Satyagraha' at Mahatma Gandhi's memorial Rajghat here, demanding that the rights of people as enshrined in the Constitution be protected.

Top Congress leaders, including former prime minister Manmohan Singh, former party chief Rahul Gandhi and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, participated in the 'Satyagraha'.

India: Opposition alliance in Jharkhand leads in 43 seats, BJP in 27

Ranchi, Dec 23 (PTI) The opposition JMM-Congress-RJD alliance in Jharkhand is leading in 43 out of the 81 seats of state Assembly till 10.45 am on Monday, while the ruling BJP is ahead in 27 seats.

The JMM is leading in 25 seats while its alliance partner Congress is ahead in 11 and the RJD in five.

The JVM(P) is leading in four seats while the AJSU Party in ahead in three and the BSP in two constituencies.

18 Indians Kidnapped By Pirates Near Nigerian Coast Released

NEW DELHI, Dec 23 (NNN-PTI) – Eighteen Indians, who were kidnapped by pirates near the Nigerian coast, had been released, officials said today (Monday).

“The Nigerian Navy and Shipping Company confirmed the release of 18 Indian nationals, taken hostage from MT Nave Constellation on Dec 3. Thank all stakeholders involved in their safe release,” Indian high commission in Abuja, posted on social media.

India: Citizenship law, NRC have nothing to do with Indian Muslims: Modi

New Delhi, Dec 22 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday sought to assuage concerns of Muslims over the amended citizenship law and the NRC, saying both have nothing to do with Indian citizens and slammed his rivals for "inciting" people and trying to divide the country in their bid to target him.

Putting up a strong defence of the contentious law, he said at a rally in the national capital that it is about giving rights to persecuted minorities from neighbouring countries and does not snatch anybody's rights.
