China says sends fighter jets to warn US Navy plane in Taiwan Strait

BEIJING, Oct 12 (Reuters) - China said on Thursday it had sent fighter jets to monitor and warn a U.S. Navy patrol aircraft that flew through the Taiwan Strait.

China claims sovereignty over democratically-governed Taiwan, and says it has jurisdiction over the narrow waterway. Taiwan and the United States dispute that, saying the Taiwan Strait is an international waterway.

Japan’s government will ask court to revoke legal status of Unification Church

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s government said Thursday it would ask a court to revoke the legal status of the Unification Church after former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s assassination raised questions about the group’s fundraising and recruitment tactics.

Education Minister Masahito Moriyama said the ministry proposed seeking the revocation after interviewing more than 170 people allegedly harmed by the fundraising tactics and other problems. The church failed to respond to dozens of questions during the seven inquiries, he said.

Russian President Putin arrives in Kyrgyzstan on a rare trip abroad

Kyrgyzstan (AP) —President Vladimir Putin arrived in Kyrgyzstan on Thursday on a rare trip abroad for the Russian leader who was indicted earlier this year by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Ukraine.

Putin met with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov and was to take part on Friday in the Commonwealth of Independent States summit, which Kyrgyzstan is hosting. Leaders of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan will also attend the summit.

Mongolia Bought 13.2 Tonnes Of Gold This Year

ULAN BATOR, Oct 10 (NNN-XINHUA) – Mongolia purchased 13.2 tonnes of gold, in the first three quarters, from legal entities and individuals, the central bank said, today.

As of Sept, Mongolia’s average gold purchase price had been 213,818.68 Mongolian tugriks (about 62 U.S. dollars) per gram, the Bank of Mongolia said in a statement.

Purchasing gold is one of the key ways for the central bank to ensure the country’s economic stability, by consistently increasing foreign currency reserves, said the bank.

Chinese developer Country Garden says it can’t meet debt payment deadlines after sales slump

HONG KONG (AP) — Chinese property developer Country Garden warned Tuesday that it cannot repay on time a 470 million Hong Kong dollar ($60 million) loan in the latest sign of distress after Beijing clamped down on mounting debts in the industry.

The company said in a filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that it “expects that it will not be able to meet all of its offshore payment obligations when due or within the relevant grace periods,” including U.S. dollar notes the firm has issued.

The company said its sales were under “remarkable pressure.”

Bangladesh To Import 150 Million Eggs To Stabilise Market

DHAKA, Oct 9 (NNN-BSS) – The Bangladeshi government has approved the import of another 50 million eggs, amid a huge public outcry, due to skyrocketing prices of eggs in the country.

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Commerce, gave approval to five firms to import the eggs. With the latest decision of the ministry announced yesterday, a total of 15 companies so far got approval to bring in 150 million eggs from abroad.

Bangladesh dengue death toll nears 1,100

DHAKA, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from dengue fever in Bangladesh so far this year is nearing the 1,100 mark amid the worst outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease.

The Bangladeshi government Monday confirmed another 10 deaths from dengue fever, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country since January to 1,096.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health, the deaths include 107 in October, 396 in September, 342 in August and 204 in July.

Cambodia reports 3rd bird flu death this year

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- A two-year-old girl from southeastern Cambodia's Prey Veng province has died of H5N1 human avian influenza, the third death from the virus recorded in the country so far this year, the Ministry of Health said Monday.

The toddler tested positive for H5N1 bird flu on Monday, the ministry said in a news release, without specifying her time of death.

The ministry said Tamiflu (oseltamivir), an antiviral drug to prevent the bird flu from spreading, was distributed to people who had direct contact with the girl.
