Indian gov should make policy to control price hike: Mamata

Kolkata, Apr 7 (PTI) Accusing the Centre of not doing anything to control price rise of fuel and other essential commodities, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday insisted that a policy should be made to arrest the hike.

She claimed that the economic situation in the country was going from bad to worse, and expressed apprehension that states might not be able disburse salaries to employees in the days to come.

India: Guv sitting on files related to key appointments: Mamata

Kolkata, Apr 4 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday accused Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar of dilly-dallying over files related to appointments to key state government posts.

Banerjee said documents pertaining to appointments of Lokayukta member, chairman of the State Human Rights Commission and Right to Information commissioners have been lying with Dhankhar for his approval since six months .

India: BJP MLA demands bifurcation of Bengal in assembly

Kolkata, Mar 16 (PTI) A BJP MLA from Kurseong in Darjeeling hills on Wednesday demanded the creation of a new state by separating the North Bengal region from West Bengal.

BJP MLA Bishnu Prasad Sharma, while speaking during the discussion on the Home and Hills Affairs department's budget, claimed that there has been no development in North Bengal and creation of a new state is the only way to resolve the woes of the people.

India: TMC inches towards massive victory in Bengal civic polls

Kolkata, Mar 2 (PTI) Ruling Trinamool Congress inched towards a massive victory in the West Bengal civic elections, as it won 13 of the 107 municipalities and was leading in 40 other bodies, an SEC official said on Wednesday.

The ruling party in the state bagged Kanthi Municipality, the bastion of Leader of Opposition and Nandigram's BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari, while Hamro Party, a new entrant in hill politics, trounced TMC, GJM and BJP to win Darjeeling Municipality.

Indian exporters see payment hurdles for shipments to Russia

Kolkata, Feb 28 (PTI) Exporters on Monday said they will face more difficulties for their shipments to Russia with a decision to exclude selected Russian banks from the global financial system SWIFT as the move would hamper direct payments for goods shipped out to the CIS country.

The US along with its key allies, including the European Union and the UK, have decided to disconnect key sanctioned Russian banks from the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication in response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

India: BJP meets Guv, seeks fresh polls in 107 civic bodies in WB

Kolkata, Feb 27 (PTI) BJP on Sunday night urged West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to intervene to get the State Election Commission to order fresh elections in 107 municipal bodies policed by central forces.

A BJP delegation consisting of General Secretary Agnimtra Paul and Sisir Bajoria made the request to Dhankhar Sunday night after meeting the State Election Commission.

India: BJP's Bengal bandh call evokes mixed response

Kolkata/Jalpaiguri, Feb 28 (PTI) The 12-hour state-wide bandh call by BJP over "widespread rigging and violence" during civic elections in West Bengal evoked a mixed response on Monday.

Transportation was normal and most of the commercial establishments remained open in South Bengal even as BJP workers staged blockades of railway tracks and roads in some areas.

India: Merger of banks created chaos, job loss: Yechury

Kolkata, Feb 23 (PTI) CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Wednesday asserted that the merger of nationalised banks has created chaos and is leading to loss of jobs.

The aim of bank nationalisation was to include the poor in the banking system so that they could avail of their advantages, but the amalgamation has negated that purpose, he claimed.

India: International Kolkata Book Fair from Feb 28

Kolkata, Feb 23 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Bangladesh State Minister for Cultural Affairs, K M Khalid will be present at the inaugural function of the International Kolkata Book Fair (IKBF) 2022 beginning on February 28.

This being the 50th year of Liberation War of Bangladesh, the Publishers and Booksellers Guild, the organisers of the fair, have decided to give special focus on Bangladesh during this edition of the book fair, Guild general secretary Tridib Chatterjee said on Wednesday.

India: SIT to probe student leader Anish Khan's death: Mamata

Kolkata, Feb 21 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that a special investigation team (SIT) will be formed to probe student leader Anish Khan's "mysterious" death that has sparked widespread protests by opposition parties.

Banerjee, who also holds the Home (Police) portfolio, said that the SIT will submit its report to her within 15 days.

She also claimed that the former Left leader, who later joined the Indian Secular Front, used to keep in touch with her party, the Trinamool Congress.
