Russian swimmer Kolesnikov breaks world record winning European gold in 50m backstroke

GLASGOW, August 4. /TASS/. Russia’s Kliment Kolesnikov was crowned as a champion at the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow on Saturday, breaking a world record in 50m backstroke with the result of 24.00 seconds.

Romania’s Robert-Andrei Glinta grabbed a silver medal (24.55), while Ireland’s Shane Ryan became a bronze medalist (24.64). Another Russian swimmer, Vladimir Morozov, came fourth (24.69).

UK blocks renewal of visas for Russian diplomatic mission in London - ambassador

The United Kingdom blocks rotation at the Russian diplomatic mission, delaying visa issuance for Russian diplomats, since visa processing times take on average between 12 to 18 months, Russia’s Ambassador to London Alexander Yakovenko said in a televised interview with the Rossiya-24 channel on Saturday.

We could have applied ourselves better, says Kohli

Birmingham, Aug 4 (PTI) India skipper Virat Kohli today rued the lack of application and poor shot selection by his batsmen after their meek surrender paved the way for an England victory in the opening Test here.

The hosts drew first blood in the five-match series with a 31-run win at the Edgbaston.

Chasing 194, Kohli stood out again with a combative 51 but lacked support at the other end, as India were all out for 162.

India suffer heartbreaking loss in series opener

Birmingham, Aug 4 (PTI) India suffered a heartbreaking 31-run loss to England as skipper Virat Kohli's heroics went in vain amid yet another abject batting capitulation in a riveting opening Test at the Edgbaston today.

It was virtually Kohli versus England and when the Indian captain was trapped lbw off Ben Stokes in the 47th over, the absorbing game was only heading the home team's way.

It was an engrossing duel between Test cricket's second most successful pacer, Anderson and Kohli on the second day when the Indian skipper was dropped twice off the bowler on 21 and 51 by Dawid Malan.

Women paid 40 pct less than men in British workplace: study

LONDON, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Britain has one of the highest gender pay gaps in Europe, the House of Commons Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee said in a hard-hitting report on Thursday.

Rachel Reeves, the Member of Parliament who chairs the committee, said the study revealed that some companies have "obscene and entirely unacceptable" gender pay gaps of more than 40 percent.

Love for cricket helped me fight off-field problems: Shami

On the opening day of the first Test here, Shami took 2-64 while R Ashwin returned with figures of 4 for 60 to help India restrict England to 285-9.

UK former far-right leader Robinson freed from prison

London, Aug 1 (AFP) British former far-right leader Tommy Robinson was freed from prison today after winning a legal challenge in a case that has galvanised his supporters worldwide.

Robinson, who founded a street-level Islamophobic fringe group called the English Defence League, was serving a 13-month jail sentence.

He was jailed for contempt of court and breaching a previous suspended sentence, having used social media to live-stream outside a court in Leeds in northern England in breach of reporting restrictions around a trial.

Trump named European Union his biggest foe

When asked in a TV interview on Sunday to name his “biggest foe globally right now”, US President Donald Trump started European Union (EU), and called the body “very difficult”.

“Well I think we have a lot of foes,” Trump told CBS News at his Turnberry golf resort in Scotland. “I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade. Now you wouldn’t think of the European Union but they’re a foe.”
