4,000 TN fishermen chased away by Sri Lankan Navy personnel

Rameswaram (TN), Dec 4 (PTI) Over 4,000 Tamil Nadu fishermen were allegedly chased away by Sri Lankan Navy while they were fishing near Katchatheevu, a fishermen association leader said here Tuesday.

The fishermen from this island town who put out to sea in over 500 boats last night were poaching fish near Katchatheevu when the Lankan navy personnel came to the spot and drove them away, Rameswaram Fishermen Association President P Sesuraja said.

He also charged the island nation's navy men with snapping the fishing nets of 10 boats.

Indian Cyclone Gaja: TN govt seeks Rs 15,000 cr aid from Centre

Chennai, Nov 22 (PTI) The Tamil Nadu government Thursday sought about Rs 15,000 crore as central assistance towards relief and rehabilitation activities in Cyclone Gaja affected districts in the state.

Chief Minister K Palaniswami met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi with a plea for central assistance for various sectors in the affected districts, the state government said here.

India: Teenaged Adivasi girl dies after being raped

Dharmapuri, Nov 11 (PTI) A 17-year-old Adivasi girl who was allegedly raped by two men at a village in Tamil Nadu last Monday RPT Monday died in a hospital, triggering protests by her family, alleging that there was a delay in accepting their complaint and nabbing the accused.

The girl died on Saturday of her injuries, following which her family staged the protests.

They continued it Sunday, but gave it up on an assurance from District collector S Malarvizhi that the culprits would be arrested within two days.

India: Three-year-old girl's throat slit in tantric ritual

Pudukottai (TN), Nov 5 (PTI) In what is suspected to be a macabre tantric ritual, the body of a three-year-old girl was found with her throat slit in a village in the district, the police said Monday.

A woman allegedly practising witchcraft has been arrested, police said.

Chinnappillai took the girl, who was playing in front of her house at Kurumpatti, into the forest and allegedly killed her believing that a child sacrifice would increase her tantric power, they said.

India: Dalit girl beheaded by neighbour for rejecting advances

Salem (TN), Oct 31 (PTI) A 13-year-old Dalit girl was beheaded at a hamlet in this district of Tamil Nadu allegedly by her neighbour after she reportedly spurned his advances.

A senior police official said Wednesday the accused Dinesh Kumar has been arrested and lodged in Salem jail and a probe was on.

The incident happened at a small village near Attur in Salem district recently.

17 TN fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy

Rameswaram (TN), Oct 30(PTI) Seventeen Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested Tuesday by the Sri Lankan Navy for fishing off Neduntheevu, a fishermen association leader said.

The fishermenfrom Ramanathapuram and Pudukottai districts were arrested at gunpoint, while they were fishing in the Lankan waters early this morning and taken to Kangesanthurai port in the island nation, Rameswaram Fishermen Association President, S Emerit told reporters here.

Their boats were also impounded, he said.

IIT-Madras unveils indigenously-developed microprocessor

Chennai, Oct 26 (PTI) The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras Friday unveiled what it claims to be the first indigenously-developed microprocessor in the country that can be used in mobile computing devices, embedded low-power wireless and network systems.

The product would come in handy to sectors such as defence, nuclear power and government agencies, as it can reduce the threat from systems infected with back-doors and hardware Trojans, a release from the institute said.

5 TN fishermen arrested by Lankan navy

Rameswaram (TN), Oct 23 (PTI) Five fishermen from Tamil Nadu were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on the charge of fishing in their territorial waters, Fisheries officials said here Tuesday.

The fishermen from Jegadapattinam in Pudukottai were fishing near Neduntheevu at around midnight Monday when they were arrested and their nets seized, they said.

The arrested fishermen were produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody till October 30, the officials added.

India: Congress has never insisted on Rahul as PM: Chidambaram

Chennai, Oct 22 (PTI) The Congress has never said "officially" that its president Rahul Gandhi should be the prime minister if an opposition alliance formed the next government, senior party leader P Chidambaram said Monday.

He insisted the Congress' focus was on dislodging the BJP government and bringing in a "progressive" alternative.

Chidambaram said the decision on who will be the prime minister in the event of an opposition alliance winning next year's Lok Sabha poll will be taken by its constituents.
