National Orders award for two S African Indian-origin citizens

28 Apr 2023; MEMO: Five Arab countries are among 19 who have expressed their interest in joining the BRICS group, Bloomberg reported.

Anil Sooklal, South Africa's ambassador to the group, said that the emerging market bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa would meet in Cape Town on 2-3 June to discuss its expansion.

"What will be discussed is the expansion of the BRICS group and the way this can be achieved."

28 Apr 2023; MEMO: Rugby's global governing body, World Rugby, has announced that the South African Rugby Union's (SARU) decision to exclude the Israeli rugby team from the international competitions was not discriminatory move.

In response, the CEO of the Israeli team, Pete Sickle, rejected the claims that the decision was due to security threats, as he told JTA: "We expected World Rugby to take a closer look at the events leading up to the withdrawal of the invitation."

South Africa, due to host Putin, rows back from pledge to quit war crimes court

JOHANNESBURG, April 26 (Reuters) - South African President Cyril Ramaphosa rowed back on Wednesday from a pledge to quit the International Criminal Court, months before he is due to host Russia's Vladimir Putin who is wanted by the ICC for suspected war crimes.

Ramaphosa had said on Tuesday that the ruling African National Congress would aim to repeal South Africa's membership of the Hague-based court, which hears cases of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. But on Wednesday, Ramaphosa's office said he had made a mistake.

Johannesburg, Apr 14 (PTI) The South African government said on Friday that fugitive businessmen Rajesh and Atul Gupta are still its citizens using the country's passports amid reports that Indian-origin brothers have acquired Vanuatu's citizenship.

South Africa said last week said that the UAE has turned down its request to extradite the two to face trial in the country on fraud and corruption charges.

South Africa police say prison escapee arrested in Tanzania

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A South African convicted murderer who faked his death to escape from prison has been arrested in Tanzania following a two-week manhunt, police have announced.

South African officials are going to Tanzania Sunday to begin to extradite Thabo Bester, 35, dubbed the “Facebook Rapist” as he used the social media platform to lure at least two women he was convicted of raping. He was also found guilty of killing one.

Bester was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2012 and it was reported in May last year that he died in a fire in his prison cell.

South Africa condemns Israeli attacks on Palestinian worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque

06 Apr 2023; MEMO: The Government of the Republic of South Africa has "noted with concern" the Israeli occupation forces' assault on Palestinian worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem. In a media statement issued by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, the government in Pretoria said that it "condemns these violent acts by the Israeli government against the worshippers and calls for calm and the withdrawal of the forces from Al-Aqsa Mosque."

Snake on a plane! South African pilot finds cobra under seat

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — A pilot in South Africa made a hasty emergency landing after discovering a highly venomous cobra hiding under his seat.

Rudolf Erasmus had four passengers on board the light aircraft during Monday’s flight when he felt “something cold” slide across his lower back. He glanced down to see the head of a fairly large Cape Cobra “receding back under the seat,” he said.

“It was as if my brain didn’t know what was going on,” he told The Associated Press.

South Africa aware of legal obligations regarding Putin visit

JOHANNESBURG, March 19 (Reuters) - South Africa is aware of its legal obligation, a spokesperson for President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Sunday, referring to a proposed visit by Vladimir Putin after an international court issued an arrest warrant against the Russian leader.

Russian President Putin was expected to visit South Africa in August to attend a BRICS summit.

"We are, as the government, cognisant of our legal obligation. However, between now and the summit we will remain engaged with various relevant stakeholders," spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said.
