UN closes passenger operations terminal at airport after Somali gov't order

MOGADISHU, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations said Sunday it has closed its passenger operations facility (Movcon) at the Aden Adde International Airport in the Somali capital, Mogadishu following a directive from the government.

The United Nations Assistance Mission (UNSOM) said it regretted Thursday's closure of the terminal which was apparently prompted by allegations that have yet to be presented to the UN in detail to permit an inquiry.

Somali forces kill 6 al-Shabaab militants in southern region

MOGADISHU, Dec 20 (NNN-Xinhua) — Somali National Army (SNA)’s special forces (Danab) on Sunday killed six fighters of al-Shabaab militant group during the operation in the southern region, military officials confirmed on Monday.

SNA commanders who led the operation told the State-owned Radio Mogadishu that the security forces which have intensified onslaught agonist the terrorists also destroyed al-Shabaab’s hideouts Mayondo, Dhay, Abdi-Marodi and Kubow in the Lower Jubba region.

China donates Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines to Somalia

MOGADISHU, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Somalia on Sunday received 500,000 doses of Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines donated by China to help intensify the fight against the pandemic in the country amid the Omicron variant.

Chinese Ambassador to Somalia Fei Shengchao said the arrival of COVID-19 vaccines demonstrates China's commitment to honoring its pledge with actions and protecting the lives and health of the Somali people.

"It speaks to China's commitment to putting people and their lives first, and closing the immunization gap in Somalia," Fei said in Mogadishu.

Turkish aid group to give relief amid deadly drought in Somalia

30 Nov 2021; MEMO: A Turkish humanitarian aid group announced Tuesday that it will take part in an ongoing relief campaign in Somalia because of a climate change-related deadly drought that has killed at least six people in the past week, Anadolu News Agency reports.

"We are currently planning CR zones. We plan to donate food and water there. We regularly donate meat to the camps in Mogadishu and Baidoa every month," IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation's Somalia representative, Hasan Demir, told Anadolu Agency.

East Africa bloc, EU condemn deadly terrorist attack in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The East African trade bloc and the European Union on Thursday condemned the suicide car bombing attack happening earlier in the day in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, leaving eight people dead and 17 others injured.

Somali police have said the target of the terror attack claimed by the militant group al-Shabaab was a convoy belonging to a security firm that guards the United Nations personnel.

Somali army kills 9 al-Shabab militants in southern region

MOGADISHU, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Somali National Army (SNA) on Wednesday killed nine al-Shabab terrorists during the ongoing security operation in Awdhigle district in the southern part of the country.

The SNA commanders said the troops which have intensified the onslaught against the extremist group destroyed the militants' key hideout at Shamgare and Raqeyle villages in the Lower Shabelle region.

According to SNA Radio, the SNA troops later took over Kabis jungle, al-Shabab's biggest hideout in the Gedo region during the security operation in the region.

Int'l partners urge Somalia to hold elections without further delay

MOGADISHU, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- International partners have called on Somali leaders to hold parliamentary elections without further delay.

The partners including the African Union, the European Union and the United Nations among other foreign nations expressed concern about the continuing delays in the Somali electoral process.

Dozens killed in fighting between Somalia army and former allied group

MOGADISHU, Oct 24 (Reuters) - At least 30 people died and over 100 were injured in intensified fighting between the Somali National Army and its former ally Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama'a (ASWJ) in the Somali state of Galmudug over the weekend, residents and hospital officials said.

The clashes, in the state's second-largest district of Guriceel, run the risk of distracting both groups from their fights against Al Shabaab, analysts and residents said.

This round of fighting broke out early Saturday and continued into Sunday, residents told Reuters.

Suicide car bomb targeting convoy in Somali capital kills at least 8 -official

MOGADISHU, Sept 25 (Reuters) - A suicide car bomb killed at least eight people in the Somali capital on Saturday at a street junction near the president's palace, police said, and al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab said it was behind the attack which targeted a convoy going into the palace.

Police spokesperson Abdifatah Aden Hassan told reporters at the scene of the blast the casualties could be higher, since some of the dead and wounded had been taken away by their relatives.

AU, Somali forces launch joint operation center to fight al-Shabab

MOGADISHU, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the Somali National Army (SNA) have launched a joint operations center in Mogadishu to boost ongoing stabilization efforts in the country.

The AU mission said in a statement on Thursday that the Joint Operations Coordination Center, which is jointly operated by AU and SNA military officers, will enhance joint planning and coordination of military operations against al-Shabab.
