Rwanda, DR Congo presidents meet at border town to strengthen bilateral ties

RUBAVU (Rwanda), June 26 (NNN-Xinhua) — Rwandan President Paul Kagame and his counterpart from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Felix Tshisekedi met at Rwanda’s border town Rubavu on Friday to discuss bilateral relations.

Tshisekedi was received by Kagame at La Corniche One-Stop Border Post in Rubavu before the two leaders toured Rubavu to assess the damage caused by the recent earthquakes following the eruption of Mount Nyiragongo volcano in eastern DRC.

Later in the day, the two presidents held a closed door bilateral meeting in Rubavu.

Rwanda capable of preventing third wave of COVID-19: health minister

KIGALI, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Rwandan Minister of Health Daniel Ngamije on Sunday affirmed the central African nation's capacity to prevent a third wave of COVID-19 despite a rise in infections in the past two weeks.

There are currently 17-20 people testing positive per 100,000 tests in the country, Ngamije said during the Rwanda Television's talk show.

France's Macron visits Rwanda as relations improve

Kigali, May 27 (AP-PTI) French President Emmanuel Macron made a key visit to Rwanda on Thursday as his country tries to mend relations with the central African country 27 years after the genocide.

Macron arrived in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, early Thursday and is due to hold talks with Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

Rwandan female genocide suspect deported back to native country from U.S.

KIGALI, April 16 (Xinhua) -- A Rwandan woman charged with crimes against humanity during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi arrived in Rwanda on Friday following her deportation from the United States.

Beatrice Munyenyezi, a genocide suspect who was arrested in 2013 in the United States and sentenced to 10 years there for lying about her role in the Rwandan genocide to obtain U.S. citizenship, arrived at Kigali International Airport at 7:04 p.m. local time (1704 GMT).

‘Hotel Rwanda’ hero faces trial as family fears for his life

KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) — As the terrorism trial for Paul Rusesabagina, whose story inspired the film “Hotel Rwanda,” is set to start on Wednesday, his family says the critic of longtime Rwandan President Paul Kagame has no chance at a fair trial and might die from poor health behind bars.

More refugees evacuated from Libya arrive in Rwanda

KIGALI, Nov 20 (NNN-Xinhua) — The fourth group of 79 refugees and asylum-seekers evacuated from Libya detention centers arrived in Rwanda late Thursday, the ministry of refugees said.

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, the refugees were taken to designated transit hotels for COVID-19 tests, and will be taken to Gashora emergency transit center in Bugesera District, south-central Rwanda, after getting their results, Olivier Kayumba, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Emergency Management, told national broadcaster Radio Rwanda.

‘Hotel Rwanda’ hero arrested on terror charges, say police

KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) — Paul Rusesabagina, portrayed in the film “Hotel Rwanda” as a hero who saved the lives of more than 1,200 people from the country’s 1994 genocide, has been arrested by the Rwandan government on terror charges, police announced on Monday.

A well-known critic of President Paul Kagame, Rusesabagina had been living outside Rwanda since 1996 and police did not say where he was apprehended. He had been living in Belgium and then in Texas in the U.S.

Rwanda Closes 3 Primate Conservation Parks to save gorillas from corona

KIGALI, Mar 21 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Rwanda announced that, it suspended tourism and research activities in three primate-dominated national parks effective immediately.

Tourism and research activities have been temporarily suspended in and around three national parks of primates, namely, Volcanoes, Mukura-Gishwati and Nyungwe, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rwanda Development Board said in a statement.

53 killed in Rwanda heavy rains since January

KIGALI, March 6 (Xinhua) -- At least 53 people were killed and 84 others injured in different parts of Rwanda due to disasters triggered by heavy rains since January this year, Ministry of Emergency Management said on Friday.

The ministry said in its disaster update that 858 houses, 196 hectares of crops, 23 roads, 17 bridges and eight churches, among others, were destroyed.

The update cited lightning, floods and rainstorms as the major causes of deaths.
