India: Students lead mega protest rally against CAA in Nagaland

Dimapur, Jan 18 (PTI) Thousands of people led by students from different colleges gathered in the Supermarket area in Dimapur district of Nagaland on Saturday to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

With banners and placards saying, "We stand united against CAA", "Save Dimapur - Listen to peoples' voice" and "CAA -- Modi Shah vote bank", people from all walks of life joined the protest rally.

Addressing the gathering, the students urged people to unite and fight until the Act is revoked.

India: 18-hour bandh begins in Nagaland aganist Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

Kohima, Nov 19 (PTI) Normal life was affected in Nagaland on Tuesday evening following an 18-hour bandh call by two organisations against the proposed tabling of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The bandh called by the North East Forum for Indigenous People (NEFIP) and Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI) began at 6 PM and will end at 12 noon on Wednesday.

India: Ruling PDA appeals GoI for early resolution of Naga issue

Kohima, Oct 28 (PTI) The ruling People's Democratic Alliance (PDA) on Monday reiterated its appeal for an early resolution of the decades-old Naga issue, inclusive, honourable and acceptable to the people.

The PDA comprises of 21 Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) MLAs, 12 of the BJP and an Independent legislator in the 60-member Nagaland house.

PDA restated its stand during a coordination meeting of its legislators along with senior party functionaries here.

India: Renewed protests against CAB launched in NE states

Imphal/Kohima/Shillong, Oct 3 (PTI) Two days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah's announcement that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) would be brought in Parliament, protests were held in Manipur, Nagaland and Meghalaya on Thursday against the controversial piece of legislation.

In Imphal Valley, members of a large number of civil society bodies and university and college students held protests amid tight police security and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the state.

India: Naga tribes take out rally against Citizenship Bill

Kohima, Oct 3 (PTI) Thousands of people representing different Naga tribes attired in their traditional dress on Thursday took out a protest rally here against the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The protest march was held under the aegis of Joint Committee on Protection of Indigenous People (JCPI), Nagaland and North East Forum of Indigenous People (NEFIP).

They submitted a memorandum to Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.

India: Nagaland apprehensive after repeal of Article 370

Kohima, Aug 5 (PTI) Following the abolition of Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, there are apprehensions in Nagaland about the possibilities of a similar action against its special provisions that are enshrined in Article 371A.

Political parties and tribal organisations, however, said they were confident that the Centre "will not dare" to make a similar move in the state as it would jeopardise the ongoing peace process and hurt the sentiment of the Nagas.

India: NPF to review its alliance with BJP in Manipur

Imphal, May 17 (PTI) Contending that the BJP does not pay heed to its ideas and suggestions, the NPF, a partner in the saffron party-led alliance in the state, has convened a meeting of its leaders on Saturday to decide if it would continue to stay in the coalition or withdraw support.

Denying the allegation, the BJP said it has extended all possible cooperation to its partners to ensure smooth functioning of the government.

India: Rahul promises to resolve Naga political problem

Dimapur (Nagaland), Apr 3 (PTI) Congress president Rahul Gandhi Wednesday gave his commitment to help resolve the decades-long Naga political problem if the party forms government at the Centre after the election.

It is a complex issue involving multiple stakeholders and talks would be held with all of them to find out a solution, Gandhi said addressing a poll meeting here.

Indian Polls: NPF to back Cong in Nagaland

Kohima, Mar 31 (PTI) In a major boost to the Congress, the Naga People's Front (NPF), which is the main opposition party in the 60-member Assembly, has decided to support K L Chishi, the grand old party's candidate for the lone Lok Sabha seat in the state.

The NPF, which is not fielding any candidate for the general election, announced its decision to back the Congress candidate during a consultative meeting of central office bearers and MLAs here on Saturday.

India: 10-hr bandh over Citizenship Bill affects life in Nagaland

Kohima, Feb 11; PTI/GANASHAKTI: Normal life was affected in Nagaland on Monday during a 10-hour bandh called by civil society organisations in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Schools and markets remained closed, vehicles were off the roads and people stayed indoors during the bandh which began at 6 AM.

The BJP is a constituent of the National Democratic Peoples Party-led Peoples Democratic Alliance (PDA) government in the state.
