Myanmar Extends Entry Restriction For Travellers To End Of Jan

YANGON, Dec 31 (NNN-MNA) – Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, decided yesterday, to extend temporary entry restrictions, for all visitors, till the end of Jan.

The ministry issued an announcement of extending the period of precautionary restriction measures, to contain the spread of COVID-19, which will expire on Dec 31 (today).

The extension will also be applied to the temporary suspension of all types of visas and visa exemption services, the ministry said.

Myanmar Military Extends Non-Operation Period Against Armed Groups For One More Month

YANGON, Dec 1 (NNN-MNA) – Myanmar military announced today, the extension of the suspension period of its operation against armed groups, to the end of Dec.

The Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services, issued a statement that the suspension of military activities, which expired yesterday, will be further extended to Dec 31.

The statement said, the extension aims to carry out effective prevention, control and treatment measures against COVID-19, and to implement eternal peace.

88 kg of heroin seized in Myanmar's central region

YANGON, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar authorities seized 88 kilograms of heroin in Mandalay region, according to a release from the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC) on Sunday.

Acting on a tip-off, the joint anti-narcotic police made a seizure in Patheingyi township on Saturday.

Heroin worth 5.28 billion kyats (4.06 million U.S. dollars) were confiscated from a truck.

Myanmar's ruling party wins in general elections

YANGON, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party has won more than enough seats to form a new government in the general elections held across the country on Nov. 8, according to a result announcement by the Union Election Commission (UEC) on Friday.

As of Friday morning, the NLD party has won 346 seats in the Union Parliament -- the House of Representatives (Lower House) and the House of Nationalities (Upper House), passing the target parliamentary seats to win, the UEC's figures showed.

Myanmar: Suu Kyi's party claims to have won majority in polls

Yangon, Nov 10 (AP/PTI) Myanmar's ruling National League for Democracy claimed Monday it had won a clear parliamentary majority and would retain power, even though the state election body has named just a few of the winners in Sunday's elections.

The Union Election Commission earlier said full results may take a week. By 8 p.m., it had announced the winners of just nine of Parliament's 642 seats, all nine NLD candidates.

Suu Kyi party set to win Myanmar vote with weak opposition

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — Voting was underway in Myanmar’s elections on Sunday, with the party of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi heavily favored to retain power it had wrestled from the powerful military five years ago.

More than 90 parties are competing for seats in the lower and upper houses of Parliament, while there are also elections at the state and regional levels.

Yangon, Nov 7 (AP/PTI) Myanmar holds national and state elections on Sunday in which Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party will be looking to hold on to power.

Myanmar fugitive monk Wirathu hands himself in to face sedition charges

YANGON (Reuters) - Hardline Buddhist nationalist monk Ashin Wirathu handed himself over to police in Myanmar’s commercial capital of Yangon on Monday after more than a year on the run from charges of sedition.

Wearing a face mask and shield, he spoke to supporters at a monks’ association in the city before driving to a police station in Dagon township, according to Reuters witnesses. Officials there did not immediately comment.

Myanmar leader Suu Kyi casts her vote in November elections

NAYPYITAW, Myanmar (AP) — Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi cast her ballot Thursday in advance voting for general elections that are taking place during a surge of coronavirus illnesses.

The Southeast Asian country confirmed almost 1,500 new cases of infection on Wednesday alone.

Suu Kyi, whose title is state counsellor, and the country’s President, Win Myint, both wore masks and gloves as they voted in the capital Naypyitaw.

Measures are being taken to ensure social distancing at the polls on election day, Nov. 8.

Amnesty Report: Businesses supporting Myanmar abuses

(AP) — The overwhelming control of Myanmar’s economy by the military through some of its biggest companies means its foreign and domestic business partners are likely supporting military units and leaders suspected of human rights abuses, critics say.

A report by Amnesty International released Thursday details some of those links with Myanma Economic Holdings PLC a huge conglomerate that was set up by the military in 1990.
