Death toll of car crash in central Mozambique rises to 28

MAPUTO, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Health authorities in central Mozambique said Monday that the death toll of the car crash in central province of Zambezia has risen to 28, after a five-year-old child passenger died at the provincial hospital.

According to the report from the state television TVM, the collision took place on Saturday in the Mopeia district of Zambezia, involving a minivan transporting passengers and a heavy truck that departed from Nampula province heading to the capital Maputo.

Chinese health professionals share experience in clinical nursing with Mozambican counterparts

MAPUTO, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- A five-day online program on training and sharing experience on clinical nursing organized by China's Sichuan Provincial Commission of Health kicked off here on Monday.

More than 40 nurses from the Maputo Central Hospital (HCM) will benefit from the program, which includes lectures, seminars, operational training on COVID-19 patients care, infection prevention and control, as well as basic and advanced life support technologies.

South Africa sends 1,500 troops to Mozambique to fight jihadists

MAPUTO, July 31 (NNN-AFRICANEWS) — South Africa is sending 1,495 troops to Mozambique to help its neighbour battle jihadists wreaking havoc in the gas-rich Cabo Delgado province north of the country. Soldiers will be a part of a growing multinational force there.

In a statement, the parliament said President Cyril Ramaphosa had authorised the deployment to support Mozambique in its fight against “acts of terrorism and violent extremists”.

Mozambique: Cyclone Eloise death toll rises to 21 – UN

MAPUTO, Jan 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) — At least 21 people were killed and hundreds of thousands affected by a super-storm that made landfall in Mozambique last week, causing heavy flooding across swathes of southern Africa, the United Nations said.

Tropical cyclone Eloise hit central Mozambique on Saturday, packing winds of up to 150 kilometres per hour and torrential rain.

59 terrorists killed in northern Mozambique: authorities

MAPUTO, Aug 13 (NNN-Xinhua) — The Defense and Security Forces of Mozambique (FDS) announced that 59 terrorists were killed over the past week in the country’s northern province of Cabo Delgado.

The terrorists were trying to occupy the district of Mocimboa da Praia for a week, and they infiltrated the communities before attacking local villages, said the Joint Command of the FDS in a statement.

Islamists becoming ‘more aggressive’ in Mozambique, warns US

MAPUTO, Aug 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The US has warned that Islamist militants are getting more aggressive in Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado with support from the Daesh group.

The militants, known locally as al-Shabab – although it has no known links to the Somali jihadi group of the same name, have been attacking remote villages across the province over the past two years.

Head of US special operations in Africa, Maj-Gen Dagvin Anderson, told journalists that the group is receiving external support that is making it more dangerous.

Dozens survive deadly shipwreck off Mozambique coast

MAPUTO, June 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Twelve people were reported to have died, including several children, when a boat sank in the bay of Pemba off northern Mozambique.

Thirty-five people survived after swimming ashore on Wednesday.

But they were then apprehended by the police on suspicion that they could be recruits to a militant group that has been mounting attacks in Cabo Delgado province.

Mozambique secures $309 million funding from IMF for coronavirus fight

WASHINGTON, April 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said it has approved a disbursement of $309 million to help Mozambique meet urgent balance of payment and fiscal needs stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.

African nations including Mozambique have become heavily indebted in the past decade and are seeking support from the IMF, World Bank and European Union for wide-ranging debt relief.
