26 Apr 2019; AFP: At least 1,300 mainly Cuban migrants escaped Thursday from a detention center in southern Mexico after threatening to set fire to the facility to protest against overcrowding.

The escape occurred at dinner time when several inmates mutinied at the center in Tapachula, in the southern state of Chiapas, according to witnesses.

"There was a large-scale unauthorized exit of people housed in the migratory station," the National Institute of Migration (INM) said in a statement.

20 Apr 2019; AFP: Thirteen people, including a child, were killed Friday when a group of unidentified gunmen opened fire on a party in the violence-wracked eastern Mexican state of Veracruz, officials said.

The Secretariat of Public Safety said the gunmen arrived at a family reunion in Minatitlan asking to see someone named "El Becky' -- the owner of a local bar -- before opening fire.

It said seven men, five women, and a child were killed, and four others injured in the attack.

MEXICO CITY, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Tuesday said job creation, not the use of force, is the way to combat today's phenomenon of mass migration.

Speaking to reporters at his daily news briefing, Lopez Obrador said: "I favor attending to the migration phenomenon with development, with employment, with wellbeing."

"I don't think the use of force or other measures are an option," he added.

MEXICO CITY, March 23 (Xinhua) -- At least 1,200 Central American migrants left the Mexican city of Tapachula in Chiapas in a caravan Saturday and headed to the U.S. border, local authorities said.

The caravan, carrying migrants including pregnant women and children, left at around 4 a.m. (1000 GMT) from the city that borders Guatemala.

The Chiapas Secretary of Civil Protection told Xinhua that its personnel accompanied the caravan to attend to any possible emergency, while federal police would provide security along the road.

CARACAS, March 22. /TASS/. The chief of staff of Venezuela’s opposition leader Juan Guaido was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of joining a terrorist group that plotted attacks on leading political and military figures, Venezuelan Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said.

"The work by the intelligence and interior ministry units led to the detention of citizen Roberto Marrero, aged 49, who bears direct responsibility for organizing criminal groups," the minister said in a statement aired by the Venezolana de Television TV channel.

MEXICO CITY, March 9 (Xinhua) -- At least 15 people were killed and three others injured in a bar attack in central Mexico on Saturday, said local authorities.

The attack was carried out by a group of armed men at a nightclub named "La Playa" in the early hours of Saturday in the city of Salamanca in Guanajuato state, said the state prosecutor in a statement.

The prosecutor confirmed that 13 people were killed at the scene, and two others died after being taken to hospital.

One of his government's strategic projects is to build a bicoastal corridor in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a narrow area of land in southern Mexico, between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, he said.

EUNICE, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico high school was forced to delay classes after authorities say vandals slipped onto campus and pour vegetable oil throughout the hallways.

The Hobbs News-Sun reports the slick attack at Eunice High School in Eunice, New Mexico, reportedly occurred late Sunday and forced custodial staff to race Monday morning to clean up the mess.

MEXICO CITY, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- At least twelve people were killed and two others injured in a clash between two groups of armed civilians in southern Mexican state of Guerrero, said government officials on Sunday.

The gun fight occurred at around 3:00 p.m. (2100 GMT) on Sunday on the road leading to the community of Paraiso de Tepila in the municipality of Chilapa in Guerrero state, said Roberto Alvarez, spokesperson of the state security authorities.
