Malaysia’s new COVID-19 cases, fatalities on the rise

KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia’s new COVID-19 cases increased by 27.9 per cent from July 3-9 compared to the week before that, Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said. 

He said some 21,355 cases were reported during that week as opposed to 16,694 cases recorded from June 26 to July 2. 

“Recoveries during the July 3-9 week also went up by 14.6 per cent from 14,293 cases to 16,379 cases,” he said in a statement on the country’s latest COVID-19 situation Monday. 

Malaysia hopes to retain seat in ICAO Council for sixth consecutive term

SEPANG (Selangor, Malaysia), July 11 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia hopes to retain its seat in the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council after a 15-year track record, says Transport Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong.

He said the Transport Ministry had to work hard for the next two months as Malaysia was seeking re-election for the sixth consecutive term on the ICAO Council for the 2022-2025 term.

Malaysia’s air passenger traffic hits 8.7 mln in Q1 2022, highest since pandemic began

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia’s total air passenger traffic improved to 8.7 million in the first quarter of this year (Q1 2022) — the highest since the start of the pandemic, said the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM).

Due to the low base effect, passenger traffic grew 415.6 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) compared with -91.2 per cent y-o-y in the same quarter last year.

Malaysia, Turkiye to expedite completion of negotiations on MTFTA expansion

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia and Turkiye have committed to continue to work expeditiously to accelerate the completion of negotiations on the expansion of the Malaysia-Turkiye Free Trade Agreement (MTFTA) as soon as possible, says the Malaysia’s Ministry of International Trade And Industry (MITI).

MITI said that included the commitment for concessions in respect of trade in services, e-commerce, and investment.

Malaysian minister expects CPO prices to stay firm

ALOR GAJAH (Melaka, Malaysia), July 3 (NNN-Bernama) — Crude palm oil (CPO) prices are not expected to fall below RM4,500 (US$1,021) a tonne, said Malaysian Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.

She said that CPO prices were expected to drop by the end of the year but this had occurred earlier as a result of Indonesia’s palm oil export ban and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Malaysia Reports 2,003 New COVID-19 Infections, One More Death

KUALA LUMPUR, Jun 27 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Malaysia reported 2,003 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight, bringing the national total to 4,556,664, according to the health ministry.

There are three new imported cases, with 2,000 cases being local transmissions, data released by the ministry showed.

One more death has been reported, taking the death toll to 35,746.

The ministry reported 1,861 new recoveries, lifting the total number of cured and discharged to 4,492,767.

Six Young Scientists Represent Malaysia At 71st Nobel Laureate Meeting In Germany

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (NNN-Bernama) — Six young scientists have been selected to represent Malaysia at the 71st Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau, Germany, being held from Sunday until July 1. 

Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) president Professor Emerita Dr Asma Ismail said they included Dr Enis Nadia Md. Yusof of Universiti Sains Malaysia, Dr Goh Choon Fu (Universiti Sains Malaysia) and Dr Nur Azzalia Kamaruzaman (Universiti Sains Malaysia).
