India: 3 hospitals turn away 2 women, 1 dies

Thane, May 31 (PTI) The Thane police have registered criminal cases against the management of three hospitals for turning away two patients amid the coronavirus outbreak, one of whom was pregnant and died in an autorickshaw, an official said on Sunday.

The three hospitals are located in Mumbra in Thane municipal limits and have been sealed by the civic body, the official said.

India: Maha govt extends lockdown in state till June 30

Mumbai, May 31 (PTI) The Maharashtra government on Sunday extended till June 30 the lockdown in the entire state, and announced easing of restrictions and phase-wise resumption of activities under the "Mission Begin Again".

As per the revised guidelines issued on Sunday, all markets, market areas and shops, except malls, will be allowed to functionfrom June 5 on odd-even basis.

While all private offices can operate with up to 10 per cent their employee strength as per the requirement from June 8 with others working from home.

India: Quarantined man ends life in Maha, another found dead

Chandrapur, May 30 (PTI) A 30-year-old man allegedly committed suicide while he was kept under institutional quarantine at the city-based Government Engineering College (GEC), where one more person was found dead, officials said on Saturday.

The bodies of the two men were found on Saturday morning, a statement issued by the district information office (DIO) said.

India: Boy kills self after parents take away his mobile phone

Thane, May 30 (PTI) A 13-year-old boy allegedly committed suicide at his Mira Road residence in the district after his parents snatched away his mobile phone, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place on Tuesday morning, a police official said.

"The boy, who studied in a local school, used to constantly play on his mobile phone while being at home.

However, his parents used to rebuke him for being glued to the mobile all the time," inspector Prakash Birajdar of Navghar Police Station said.

India: Temple looted in Palghar; priests attacked

Palghar, May 29 (PTI) Three unidentified assailants allegedly attacked two priests and looted a temple at Balivali in Maharashtra's Palghar district, an incident which came more than a month after the lynching of two sadhus in a village near here, police said on Friday.

The incident took place at around 12.30 am on Thursday when three armed men barged into Jagrut Mahadev Mandir and Ashram at Balivali under Vasai taluka, an official said.

India: Sonu Sood airlifts 177 Odia girls from Kerala

Mumbai, May 29 (PTI) Actor Sonu Sood on Friday came to the rescue of 117 girls as he helped them reach home in Odisha.

The actor airlifted the girls who were stuck in Kerala due to the nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus.

According to a source close to the actor, Sood was informed about the group of girls by a close friend from Bhubaneswar and he decided to help them.

India: Forex reserves soar to record high of USD 490.04 bn

Mumbai, May 29 (PTI) The country's foreign exchange reserves swelled by USD 3.005 billion to a lifetime high of USD 490.044 billion in the week to May 22, mainly on account of a rise in foreign currency assets, RBI data showed on Friday.

In the previous week, the reserves had increased by USD 1.726 billion to USD 487.04 billion.

Foreign currency assets (FCA), a major component of the overall reserves, increased by USD 3.035 billion to USD 451.706 billion in the reporting week, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data showed.

India: Case against SP leader Abu Azmi, others over protest

Mumbai, May 29 (PTI) A case was registered on Friday against Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi and 45 others for violating lockdown norms during a protest in the city, a police official said.

Azmi, president of the Maharashtra unit of the Samajwadi Party, had had a heated argument with senior police inspector of Nagpada police station Shalini Sharma in the early hours of Thursday.

He had alleged that inspector Sharma misbehaved with him.

India: ACP booked for extorting Rs 40,000 from youth

Pune, May 27 (PTI) A case has been registered against an assistant commissioner of police posted in Pune for allegedly extorting Rs 40,000 from a youth in Satara district of Maharashtra, an official said.

Bhuinj Police Station in Satara has registered the case in this connection against ACP Deepak Humbre, who was attached to the Special Branch.

Humbre had been on "compulsory leave" for the last couple of months after an inquiry was pending in connection with a case against him, police said.

India: Corona positive Maha minister hospitalised

Mumbai, May 25 (PTI) A Maharashtra cabinet minister and senior Congress leader, who has tested positive for coronavirus, was on Monday admitted in a hospital here, a close aide said.

He became the second cabinet minister after NCP leader Jitendra Awhad to test positive for coronavirus.

The minister had contracted the infection a few days back and is undergoing treatment, a Health official had said on Sunday.
