Libya resumes international flights after 4-month halt

28 July 2020; MEMO: Libyan air carriers resumed flights on Sunday after a four-month halt in operations as part of measures taken to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Misrata International Airport said that the first flight by the private airline Libyan Wings took off in line with guidelines prepared by the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority, according to Anadolu Agency. The second plane to take off was for the Libyan state-owned Afriqiyah Airways.

Sarraj discusses lifting Libya oil fields blockade with US ambassador in Ankara

25 July 2020; MEMO: Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj discussed with US Ambassador to Turkey David Satterfield on Friday the lifting of the blockade on Libya’s oil fields.

This came during a meeting held by the two sides, according to a statement issued by the media office of the Libyan government.

Libyans face painful power cuts as years of chaos hit grid

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Warfare has stopped - for now - in the Libyan capital, but long power blackouts caused by years of poor maintenance still cause misery in the scorching summer weather.

The blackouts have led to protests, and armed men storming electricity facilities to demand engineers bring back power, underscoring continued instability even after an assault by eastern forces on Tripoli ended last month.

Libya: Egypt's decision to send its army is ‘a declaration of war’

23 July 2020; MEMO: Egypt’s decision to approve the deployment of its army to its western borders is a “declaration of war” against Libya and a violation of the Arab League and UN charters, Libyan Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha said on Tuesday.

“Egyptian parliament approval of troops deployment outside its western borders is a declaration of war on Libya and violates Arab League and UN charters,” Bashagha said late Tuesday in a tweet which he later removed.

More Than 240 Illegal Immigrants Rescued Off Libyan Coast

TRIPOLI, July 21 (NNN-XINHUA) – The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), said Monday, that, more than 240 illegal immigrants were rescued off the Libyan coast in the past week.

On July 13-20, “243 migrants were intercepted at sea and returned to Libya,” IOM said.

IOM mentioned that a total of 6,119 illegal immigrants have been rescued off the Libyan coast and returned to Libya this year, while 9,225 illegal immigrants were rescued and returned to Libya last year.

10 July 2020; MEMO: Libya’s delegate to the UN, Taher Al-Sunni, has said that his country no longer accepts the UAE’s presence in its political dialogues. Al-Sunni made his comment during his speech at the UN Security Council session on Libya in New York on Wednesday.

Libya: TV footage of ovens used by Haftar to torture oppositionists

09 July 2020; MEMO: Libya Febrayer TV yesterday aired a video showing detention facilities, which it described as “human ovens”, where oppositionists were tortured by renegade General Khalifa Haftar’s forces.

The video showed very narrow cells located in the city of Tarhuna, south-east of the capital, Tripoli, with steel doors.
