India: Tripura guv calls for cordial relations with Bangladesh

Agartala, Jan 26 (PTI) Tripura Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki today stressed on the need for cordial relations with the neighbouring Bangladesh for development of transport routes that would benefit the state as well as the entire north eastern region.

Addressing the 70th Republic Day function at the Assam Rifles Ground here after unfurling the Tri-colour, Solanki said a new waterway is being set up between Bangladesh and Tripura to make the state a trade hub.

India: Voter's revised list published

KANPUR: As many as 1.10 Lakh voters have been included in all the ten assembly seats of recently published voter’s revised list.

Women have shown interest in registration and Kidwai Nagar assembly constituency has seen a marked increase of 7,479 female voters followed by Kalyanpur (7,364), Cantonment (7,244) and Govindnagar (6,973).

India: Youth's bike falls into cave, dies later

KANPUR: One youth lost his precious life in a 10-feet deep cave on Panki-Kalyanpur road here on Thursday late night. Jalkal had dug up a pothole in order to repair the water pipeline. But it was not filled up properly after completion of repairing work. Even barricading was not done suitably. The bike entangled into the wooden log and fell into the deep opening. The rider was battling between life and death inside the ditch.

Indian fans stealing milk for movie poster: milk traders

25 Jan 2019; AFP: Indian dairy traders have lodged a police complaint after cinema fans stole huge amounts of milk to pour on film posters for an upcoming movie to bring it good luck.

"Paal abhishekam" is a Hindu religious practice involving pouring milk on the idols of deities.

But film buffs often perform the same ritual on huge cut-outs and posters of actors, particularly in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu where temples dedicated to film stars are not uncommon.

India: Priyanka, Scindia given target to form Cong govt in UP

Amethi (UP), Jan 24; PTI: Congress president Rahul Gandhi Thursday said he has given his sister Priyanka Gandhi, newly entrusted with eastern Uttar Pradesh, the target of ensuring that the party forms the next government in the state.

The Congress will also fight the coming Lok Sabha polls with “full strength”, he said at a public meeting in his constituency.

His two-day visit to Amethi had coincided Wednesday with the formal entry of Priyanka Gandhi in politics, after years of speculation on whether she would take the plunge.

"Save India, save democracy slogan is reverberating across the country. The United India rallies (of opposition parties) are creating a buzz in the country. The country will not tolerate anti-people rule," the TDP president told party leaders during his daily teleconference.

Indian SC to examine Gov decision for 10% quota to poor Upper Caste

New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI) The Supreme Court Friday decided to examine the Centre's decision to grant 10 percent reservation in jobs and education to poor candidates belonging to general category.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna issued notice to the central government on various petitions challenging the validity of the Constitution (103 Amendment) Act, 2019, which paved the way for grant of quota to poor belonging to general category.

Indian SC refuses to stay amendments to SC/ST Act

New Delhi, Jan 24 (PTI) The Supreme Court Thursday refused to stay the proposed amendments to the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act which restored the no anticipatory bail provision for the accused.

A bench headed by Justice A K Sikri said the pending review petition filed by the Centre against the apex court's March 20, 2018 verdict and the pleas challenging the new amendments made in the SC/ST verdict will be taken up together.

The bench referred the matter to the Chief Justice for reconstitution of a bench which Justice U U Lalit was a part of.

India: Not going back to era of ballot papers: CEC

New Delhi, Jan 24 (PTI) Amid renewed demands against the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs), Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora on Thursday asserted that the Election Commission is not going back to ballot papers.

EVMs are being used as a "football" due to a "motivated slugfest", he said.

"I would like to make it very, very clear one more time that we are not going back to the era of ballot papers," Arora said, addressing a gathering ahead of National Voters Day.

India: Man held for raping 4-year-old daughter

Agartala, Jan 24 (PTI) A man was arrested on the charge of raping his 4-year-old daughter in Dhalai district, police said Thursday.

The 4-year-old child complained of severe pain in her private parts when she was at her Anganwadi school and when the teacher questioned her, she revealed what her father had done to her.

The Anganwadi school teacher then filed an FIR on the basis of which the accused was arrested Wednesday, Superintendent of Police Sudipta Das said.
