India: Protests against Modi in TN reflect nation's mood

Amaravati, Jan 28 (PTI) Protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Tamil Nadu reflected the "mood of the nation", Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said Monday.

The Tamilians protested with black flags and balloons, against the neglect of the state that suffered damages in cyclone 'Gaja', Naidu told his party leaders during a tele-conference here, warning Modi would face much severe protests in Andhra Pradesh.

Northeastern allies of BJP to meet against Citizenship Bill

Guwahati/Shillong/Aizawl, Jan 28 (PTI) Regional parties across the Northeast which are in alliance with the BJP will meet in Guwahati on Tuesday to put forth their objections to the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill.

They will be joined by the JD(U), NDA's major ally in Bihar, and the AGP, which recently snapped ties with the BJP in Assam over the proposed legislation that seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslim nationals from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan after six years of residence in India.

India: Over 78% turnout in Ramgarh assembly poll in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Jan 28 (PTI) Polling in the assembly election in Rajasthan's Ramgarh constituency ended Monday with a voter turnout of 78.45 per cent, officials said.

They, however, said the turnout is likely to increase as there were people in queues in several booths after 5 PM, the scheduled time for voting to end.

Final voter turnout will be released later, they said.

India: UP man gets life in jail for killing wife over dowry

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Jan 28 (PTI) A court here convicted a man on Monday and sentenced him to life in jail for burning his wife to death in 2013.

The fast track court also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on Monu after finding him guilty under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

India: Maha cane cultivators protest over non-payment by mills

Pune, Jan 28 (PTI) Thousands of sugarcane cultivators Monday carried out a protest march to the Maharashtra Sugar Commissionerate in Pune demanding fair and remunerative price and clearance of dues by sugar mills.

The protest, led Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana leader and Lok Sabha MP Raju Shetti, started from Alka Chowk.

Pakistan not to attend Kolkata book fair due to visa issues

Kolkata, Jan 28 (PTI) Six publishers of Pakistan had evinced interest in participating in the 43rd International Kolkata Book Fair to be inaugurated on Thursday, but they would not be able to do it because of visa issues, organisers said here Monday.

A total of 26 countries from across the world will be attending the book fair which will witness participation of authors from Russia, Costa Rica, Spain, Scotland, Australia, Argentina, Bangladesh and this year's theme country Guatemala.

India: Man held for supplying ammunition to Naxal terrorists

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) Delhi Police's Special Cell has arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly supplying ammunition to the CPI (Maoist) in Bihar's Ara, officials said Monday.

Raj Bahadur alias Raj Kishore, a resident of Kasap village in Ara town of Bihar's Bhojpur district, was carrying a reward of Rs 1 Lakh on his head, police said Monday.

The arrest was made on January 23 after police got a tip-off that Bahadur will visit one of his acquaintance in the Shiv Ganj Colony area of the Ara city, police said.

Indian Cong slams BJP on attack over Siddaramaiah incident

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) The Congress on Monday slammed the BJP for its attack over former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah's alleged misbehavior with a woman at an event, saying it does not have the moral, constitutional or political right to talk about women's issues.

Siddaramaiah landed in a controversy Monday when he snatched the microphone from a woman during a verbal duel resulting in her dupatta getting dislodged at an event in Varuna in Mysuru.

India: Five Naxal terrorists killed in Jharkhand

Ranchi, Jan 29 (PTI) At least five Naxals have been killed in an encounter with security forces in Jharkhand Tuesday, officials said.

Two AK-47 rifles, a .303 rifle and five pistols were recovered from the Naxals, they said.

A team of CRPF's 209 CoBRA battalion and state police had an exchange of fire with Naxals near the Rotkatoli village under Bari police station along the border of Khunti and West Singhbhum districts around 6:20 AM, they said.
