India: Professor held for bribery, sexual harassment in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Nov 26 (PTI) A medical college professor has been arrested by the Gujarat Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on the charges of sexual harassment and demanding bribe from junior teachers for favourable appraisal.

The accused, Dr S K Nagar, is a Class-1 state government employee and currently serves as a professor with the state-run MP Shah Medical College in Jamnagar, the ACB said in a release on Thursday.

He had earlier served as the head of the anatomy department with Vadodara Medical College, it added.

India: Sadiq Jamal fake encounter case: 2 Guj cops discharged

Ahmedabad, Nov 24 (PTI) A special CBI court on Tuesday discharged two policemen accused in the 2003 Sadiq Jamal alleged fake encounter case, after observing there wasn't sufficient ground to proceed against them.

Bhavnagar resident Sadiq, who police claimed was a Lashkar-e Toiba operative out to kill then chief minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders, was killed in Naroda locality of city's outskirts on January 13, 2003.

India: 11 killed, 16 injured in truck crash near Vadodara

Vadodara, Nov 18 (PTI) At least 11 people died and 16 others were injured when a mini-truck in which they were travelling rammed into another truck on the outskirts of Gujarat's Vadodara city early Wednesday morning, police said.

The accident took place at Waghodia circle near the city around 2.45 am when the victims were heading towards Pavagadh in Panchmahal district, Vadodara Deputy Commissioner of Police Karanraj Vaghela said.

India: BJP wins all 8 seats in Gujarat by-elections

Ahmedabad, Nov 10 (PTI) In a clean sweep, the ruling BJP on Tuesday won all the eight assembly seats in Gujarat where by-elections were held, dealing a blow to the opposition Congress which had bagged these constituencies in 2017.

The BJP's tally in the 182-member Assembly has now reached 111.

Voting for the eight seats was held on November 3 and counting of ballots was taken up on Tuesday.

The Congress, disappointed by the results, said they had expected voters will teach a lesson to party MLAs who resigned and switched sides.

India: Tantrik, two others held for raping two sisters

Navsari, Nov 7 (PTI) A tantrik and two others were arrested for allegedly raping two sisters, one of them a minor, from Navsari district of south Gujarat, the police said on Saturday.

The police from Gandevi town on November 3 arrested Vishnu Naik and two of his aides based on the FIR lodged by the victims' father last week, an official said.

The victims' father had gotten in touch with the accused, a resident of Nandurbar district of Maharashtra, to resolve some personal problems a couple of months ago, the official said.

India: Posters of French president removed by cops in Vadodara

Ahmedabad, Oct 30 (PTI) Posters calling for boycott of France and its president Emmanuel Macron surfaced in a Muslim-dominated locality in Gujarat's old Vadodara city and were later removed by police on Friday, an official said.

According to the police, the posters, carrying Macron's photograph and the words "Boycott Macron" and "Boycott France", were pasted by some unidentified persons on a small stretch of a road at Nawab Wada.

India: Shoe hurled at Gujarat Deputy CM

Ahmedabad, Oct 26 (PTI) An unidentified person on Monday hurled a shoe in the direction of Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel when he was addressing the media after a poll rally in Vadodara district.

However, the footwear missed the target and landed just a few inches away from Patel.

While the police started an investigation into the incident, the ruling BJP saw Congress's hand in the episode, a charge rejected by the opposition party.

India: Three arrested for card cloning scam in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Oct 23 (PTI) A hotel receptionist and two others have been arrested for allegedly cloning customers' debit and credit cards using skimmer machines and using them to withdraw money in Gujarat's Ahmedabad city, an official said on Friday.

The Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Branch nabbed Digvijay Singh, a receptionist at a four-star hotel, Delhi resident Yuvraj Pardesi and Surat resident Atul Ghelani, the official said.

India: 1.3 lakh children working as labourers in Guj farms: NGO

Ahmedabad, Oct 20 (PTI) Nearly 1.30 lakh children, mostly tribal, are illegally employed at cottonseed farms inGujarat, a city-based NGO has claimed.

Taking cognisance of the matter, an official from the state labour department told PTI on Tuesday that they will send their teams in areas specified by the NGO and take action if any wrongdoing is found.

India: Farm owner booked for raping woman labourer in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Oct 6 (PTI) A 22-year-old tribal woman has been allegedly raped by a farm owner at a village in Kutch district of Gujarat, police said on Tuesday.

The alleged incident had occurred on September 16 in Ratnal village in Anjar taluka but the FIR was registered only on Tuesday as the accused Ranchhod Ahir had threatened to kill husband of the woman if she disclosed the incident, an official said quoting the complaint.

The couple was working as labourers at Ahir's farm at the time of the incident.
