Egypt's famed bazaar welcomes return of Chinese tourists

CAIRO, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Shop owners in Khan el-Khalili, one of the most famed tourist bazaars in the Egyptian capital Cairo, are expecting the return of Chinese guests after China announced its easing of travel restrictions starting from Jan. 8.

Located in the heart of Cairo's old Islamic district, the centuries-old market used to bustle with tourists coming from all over the world.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic that broke out three years ago has depleted the market of its vibrant vibe.

Egypt man who strangled his fiancée sentenced to death

03 Jan 2023; MEMO: Mohamed Samir, who murdered his fiancée Kholoud Al-Sayed Farouk, has been sentenced to death by a court in Egypt.

In October last year Mohamed strangled his fiancée to death in Port Said after she broke off the engagement.

Mohamed then threatened to kill her, and the following day broke into Kholoud's house and murdered her.

Egypt: Sisi says government will not reduce projects' spending

27 Dec 2022; MEMO: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said the government will not cut spending on national projects, despite the scarcity of US dollars in the market.

Speaking during the inauguration of a project in Egypt, El-Sisi said Egypt is continuing to spend on national projects without paying attention to the pressure resulting from the scarcity of the US dollar supply in the market.

Since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, more than $23 billion worth of investments have exited Egypt.

Egypt gov't HQ to relocate to new capital in January

Egypt: Israeli assets in energy company sparks boardroom crisis

21 Dec 2022; MEMO: Britain's Capricorn Energy Company which manages natural gas and oil assets in Egypt plans to dismiss seven of its executives who reject a takeover deal by Israel's NewMed Energy, Reuters has reported. The proposed merger would see a new company operating in the Egyptian and Israeli natural gas fields, amid efforts by Cairo and Tel Aviv to reserve a share of exports for energy-hungry Europe.

Suez Canal Earned Record Revenue Of 7.9 Billion USD In 2022

CAIRO, Dec 20 (NNN-MENA) – Egypt’s Suez Canal, registered a record-breaking revenue of 7.932 billion U.S. dollars in 2022, the chairman of Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA), announced yesterday.

“The revenues of 2022 are the highest in the SCA’s history,” Osama Rabie told parliament, in a public session. The revenue for 2021 was 6.333 billion dollars.

More than 23,000 ships, carrying 1.4 billion tonnes of cargo, passed the navigation course in 2022, up from 21,700 ships, in the previous year, he said.

20 Ancient Tombs Discovered In N. Egypt

CAIRO, Dec 20 (NNN-MENA) – An Egyptian archaeological mission, discovered 20 tombs, dating back to the 26th Dynasty of ancient Egypt, running from 664 to 525 BC, the Egyptian ministry of tourism and antiquities, said yesterday.

The tombs were unearthed at the site of Tell El Deir (Hill of the Monastery), in the northern city of Damietta, said a ministry statement, adding, the find would “rewrite the city’s history.”

Egypt media tycoon Mohamed El-Amin dies in prison

19 Dec 2022; MEMO: Egyptian media tycoon Mohamed Al-Amin has died of cancer yesterday while serving a three-year jail sentence for human trafficking and sexual misconduct.

Journalist Mustafa Bakri announced the 62-year-old's death on Twitter, saying he had been transferred to Al-Salam International Hospital in Cairo a few months ago from Wadi El-Natrun Prison, where he was serving his sentence.

Egypt discovers large gas field in Mediterranean, minister says

CAIRO, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Egypt has discovered a large gas field in the Nargis block in the eastern Mediterranean, Petroleum Minister Tarek El Molla said on Thursday.

Evaluation is still ongoing to determine the field's reserves, he said in a briefing to a parliamentary committee.

Nargis is one of four offshore exploration blocks in which Chevron (CVX.N) holds operating interests in Egypt along with Tharwa Petroleum Co, according to Chevron's website.
