India: Orders to JNUSU to vacate office an attempt to 'suppress' elected student body

New Delhi, Oct 17; GANASHAKTI: Accusing the Jawaharlal Nehru University of targeting students, the CPI(M) on Thursday said that asking the students' union to vacate their offices in the varsity premises was an attempt to "suppress" the newly-elected body.

The CPI(M) politburo alleged that under the present government all central educational institutions were subject to "regimentation" and academic freedom and democratic rights under "assault".

Kashmir: SC asks JK admin to place before it orders imposing restrictions

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Jammu and Kashmir administration to place before it the administrative orders imposing communication and other restrictions in the state following the abrogation of provisions of Article 370.

A bench headed by Justice N V Ramana questioned Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the administration, as to why the administrative orders have not been filed yet in the court.

India: Ayodhya bench judges to sit in chambers on Thursday

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) A day after concluding the marathon hearing in the politically sensitive Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute case, the members of the 5-Judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court will sit "in chambers" on Thursday.

A notice in this regard has been issued by the Supreme Court saying that Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and four other judges will sit in chambers, where parties involved are not allowed.

India: CJI Ranjan Gogoi cancels foreign visit

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has reportedly cancelled his foreign visit to attend official programmes, sources said on Wednesday.

The CJI, who headed a bench on Ayodhya land dispute case in which the judgement was reserved, has cancelled his programme for foreign visit due to some exigencies, they said.

Gogoi was to travel to some South American countries, Middle East and some other countries before he demits office as CJI on November 17.

India: Doctor arrested on charges of raping woman

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) A doctor working with a city hospital was arrested after a 27-year-old married woman alleged that he raped her after offering her a drink laced with sedatives at his house in Gautam Nagar, police said on Wednesday.

The doctor was arrested on Saturday after the woman approached police and registered a case, they said.

In her complaint, the woman alleged that he raped her in May this year and since then he blackmailed her with her obscene photographs that he had clicked, a senior police official said.

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday made it clear that it will conclude today the day-to-day hearing in the politically sensitive Ram Janmbhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case at Ayodhya, saying "enough is enough".

A 5-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said that it is hearing the Ayodhya land dispute case for the last 39 days and no more time beyond today will be granted to parties to conclude the hearing in the case.

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday attacked the Uttar Pradesh government over its decision to do away with 25,000 home guards and asked what sort of "craziness" has taken over the mind of the dispensation.

The Congress general secretary made the remarks after the BJP government in the state on Tuesday announced that it was doing away with 25,000 home guards as the state could not afford the new allowances the Supreme Court has asked it to pay.

India: Exports dip 6.57 pc in Sep

New Delhi, Oct 15 (PTI) India's exports contracted by 6.57 per cent to USD 26 billion in September mainly due to significant dip in shipments from key sectors such as petroleum, engineering, leather, chemicals, and gems & jewellery.

Imports too declined by 13.85 per cent to USD 36.89 billion, narrowing trade deficit to USD 10.86 billion in September, according to official data released on Tuesday.

Trade deficit in September last year stood at USD 14.95 billion.

India: Air quality 'very poor' at many places in Delhi-NCR

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) Many areas in the Delhi-National Capital Region recorded air quality in the "very poor" category on Wednesday morning, with particulate matter less than 10 micrometers in diameter being the primary pollutant.

Delhi's overall Air Quality Index (299) also bordered "very poor" levels. On Tuesday, it stood at 270 at 4 pm.

Seventeen of the 37 air quality monitoring stations in the national capital recorded the overall AQI in the "very poor" category, according to data of the Central Pollution Control Board.
