New Zealand: Volcano erupts in Pacific, West Coast under tsunami advisory

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — An undersea volcano erupted in spectacular fashion near the Pacific nation of Tonga on Saturday, sending large tsunami waves crashing across the shore and people rushing to higher ground. A tsunami advisory was in effect for Hawaii, Alaska and the U.S. Pacific coast.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or the extent of the damage as communications with the small island nation remained cut off hours after the eruption.

Fiji: Volcano In Tonga’s Hunga Ha’apai Island Erupts Again

SUVA, Jan 14 (NNN-PIN) – The volcano in Tonga’s Hunga Ha’apai island, erupted again today, sending ash, steam and gas into the air.

According to Tonga’s news website, Matangi Tonga Online, the volcano, about 65 km north of capital city, Nuku’alofa, has erupted continuously since esrly this morning, raising the plume to an altitude of five to 20 km above sea level.

Volcanic ash was also reported from the island of Fonoi, in the Ha’apai Group and some islands.

Australian researchers find new approach to break bacterial antibiotic resistance

SYDNEY, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- An Australian-led international research team has unlocked a key to making existing frontline antibiotics work again against the deadly bacteria that cause pneumonia.

The research, led by Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, was published in Cell Reports on Wednesday. It discovered how to repurpose a molecule called PBT2 -- originally developed as a potential treatment for disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases -- to break bacterial resistance to commonly used frontline antibiotics.

Australia’s New South Wales sees deadliest day of pandemic

SYDNEY (AP) — Australia’s New South Wales state reported 16 deaths on Sunday in its deadliest day of the pandemic, even as it relaxed rules to allow some essential workers in isolation to return to work if they are asymptomatic.

Just over 30,000 new cases were reported in Australia’s most populous state, forcing those people to join more than 200,000 others in isolation.

Australia: Former PM tests positive as omicron cases rise

Sydney, Jan 8 (AP) Australia's former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, as case numbers hit new highs across the country and health officials warned that the real number of cases is likely much higher than testing shows.

Turnbull, who was prime minister from 2015 to 2018, confirmed on Twitter he was isolating at home after a positive test.

Australia, Japan sign defense pact as China concerns loom

SYDNEY (AP) — The leaders of Japan and Australia signed a “landmark” defense agreement Thursday that allows closer cooperation between their militaries and stands as a rebuke to China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met in a virtual summit to sign the Reciprocal Access Agreement, the first such defense pact signed by Japan with any country other than the United States.

Australia, Japan to sign ‘historic’ defense, security pact

SYDNEY (AP) — Australia and Japan will sign a treaty on Thursday to increase defense and security cooperation in a move that has been hailed as “historic” but which might anger China.

Prime ministers Scott Morrison of Australia and Fumio Kishida of Japan will meet in a virtual summit to sign the agreement, which Morrison said “will underpin greater and more complex practical engagement between the Australian Defense Force and the Japanese Self-Defense Forces.”

Australia COVID-19 cases surge, overloading testing system

SYDNEY, Jan 4 (Reuters) - Australian COVID-19 cases soared to a pandemic record on Tuesday as the Omicron variant ripped through most of the country, driving up hospitalisation rates as the once-formidable testing regime buckled under lengthy wait times and stock shortages.

The country which for a year and half used a system of constant testing, contact tracing and lockdowns to squash most outbreaks, clocked 47,799 new infections, up nearly a third on Monday's number which was also a record.
