New Round Of Talks Started Between Yemeni Gov’t, Houthi Rebels In Jordan

AMMAN/SANAA, Jun 17 (NNN-PETRA/SABA) – Negotiations started in Jordan’s capital, Amman yesterday, between the Yemeni government and the Houthi rebel group, under the patronage of the United Nations.

In the two-day talks, the delegations from the two sides will discuss the issue of exchanging prisoners and seek solutions to the obstacles to the implementation of a previous agreement in this regard, a well-informed Yemeni source, said.

The source, who asked not to be identified, said both sides discussed the visit to each other’s prisoners, after the planned visit in May was postponed.

The source described the atmosphere of the meeting as positive, but did not provide any further details.

Majid Fadail, the spokesperson for the government negotiating delegation, expressed optimism for the success of the talks in a tweet, emphasising the objective of securing “the release of all prisoners and abductees” on the basis of reciprocity.

In Apr, the two sides exchanged about 880 prisoners. However, the second round of prisoner swap talks has been postponed, after they traded accusations over delays of visiting prisoners.
