Kanpur: Till the last year the traffic police used to rent its sturdy horses but this practice has now been stopped following an order of the department' higher authority during the ardh-Kumbh fair at Allahabad. In accordance with the new directives the horses would be brought into use for the traffic police. Complete curb on renting the horses were applied.
In recent days two well-built horses namely Dhananjay & Rangeela were auctioned in Rs eighteen thousand. They served the traffic police department for as many as 25 long years.
According to the officials they had been bought in rupees five thousand at the age of four and five years.
After a rigorous training at Moradabad these horses were brought at the traffic lines here. Afterwards both the horses took part at every occasion in the department.
Sushil Kumar, SP(traffic) told their retirement would be felt for all the time. Such a long association with them was unique in itself. These were the oldest horses at the traffic lines.
He also disclosed that one mare named Shobha had been brought from Mordabad to include in the traffic squad here. It was bought in eighty thousand rupees.
The caretakers stated that there are a total of 25 horses at present at the Traffic Lines. The most intelligent horse is Udal that gets encomiums from even officers. It leads the parade on the republic day even.
