India: 'Street vending looks great the moment it brings income'

Kanpur: Pinched-faced, middle-aged and short-sized street vendor, who by chance appears in a certain locality of Jajmau remains quite proficient.

He was in every way endowed with his servicing skill of the defective gas stove.

That's why the housewives if facing defects in the gas stove call him at the house for repairing the modern-day chulha.

Though such types of street vendors are not normally available these days, so when they happen to appear in the locality their service is taken up.

Frankly, it was an insanely busy day for the vendor as he accepted that he got the chance to service the gas stoves at two or more houses in the Jajmau area.

And he also added that the next few days were also going to be busier for him as well.

"If a street vendor like me does not earn a few amounts of money with daily duties, I along with my family can not be able to run the daily livelihood," maintained the man.

"I feel satisfied if I get the labour at the end of the long day," pointed out the man.

Like other earning pursuits, street vending can be hard to start. But the moment job brings money it almost immediately feels great while doing it, and certainly afterwards, explained the man.

When he was asked about a shop at a place he stated that it was not possible for him. Therefore he feels free in providing his mastery in repairing the impaired items of the household usage as a street vendor.

He told that he learnt the craft of repairing things for many years. He used to sit at a spot either in the Lal Bangla area or the Idgah area near Nai Chungi here.

But, on his charges, he did not fail to mention that it was not as high as the shops are extracting. His repairing charges were also not lesser as customers stressed.

Only for replacing two nuts, he charged as many as one hundred fifty rupees, as was disclosed by a customer.

The nuts were vital components of the gas stove. The gas reaches the flame through a tiny hole in the nut.

The customer also spoke of his suggestion on boiling the soot mixed burner. The chemical he carried with him was nothing but used mobile oil.

Although he did not clear his age, yet he was quite at ease in telling he was engaged for over a decade in street vending.
