India: Wish to finish hearing Hijab case this week: K'natka HC

Bengaluru, Feb 22 (PTI) The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday said it wishes to dispose of the Hijab related case this week itself and sought the cooperation of all the parties involved.

As soon as the court proceedings began, a lawyer appearing for the petitioner girls requested the full bench of the Karnataka High Court for some relaxation to the Muslim girls who wish to appear in the schools and colleges with Hijab. They had moved the court against the hijab ban.

USA: Officers’ trial in Floyd killing enters possible final week

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The trial of three former Minneapolis police officers charged with violating George Floyd’s civil rights heads into what may be its final week Monday, with the third officer yet to take his turn on the stand.

Thomas Lane is expected to testify as his attorney presents his case, the last to do so in the nearly month-long proceeding before the federal trial moves to closing arguments and then to the jury.

Tunisia extends state of emergency until end of 2022

19 Feb 2022; MEMO: Tunisian President Kais Saied decided on Friday to extend the state of emergency in the country until  31 December, 2022.

This came according to a decision published by the Official Gazette of the Republic of Tunisia in its issue released on Friday.

Saied initially extended the state of emergency for six months from 26 December, 2020, to 23 June, 2021.

On 24 June, the president extended the state of emergency until 23 July.

Tunisia's military court sentences lawmaker on charges of insulting President

18 Feb 2022; MEMO: A member of Tunisia's suspended parliament, Yassin Ayari, told Reuters that a military court, on Friday, sentenced him in absentia to 10 months in prison on charges of insulting the President and the army, after he described the President's move to freeze parliament as a military coup.

President Kais Saied suspended the Parliament on 25 July, dismissed the government and seized control of most authorities, drawing widespread criticism at home and abroad, Reuters reports.

Australia to list Hamas as a terrorist organisation

17 Feb 2022; MEMO: The government of Australia will list the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas as a terrorist organisation.

"The views of Hamas and the violent extremist groups listed today are deeply disturbing, and there is no place in Australia for their hateful ideologies," said Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews.

"It is vital that our laws target not only terrorist acts and terrorists, but also the organisations that plan, finance and carry out these acts," Andrews added.

Egypt condemns displacement of Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah

18 Feb 2022; MEMO: The Egyptian foreign ministry yesterday condemned the recent eviction of Palestinians from their homes in occupied East Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood.

"Egypt is following with great concern the violent incidents taking place in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah," the ministry said in a statement, adding that Palestinians were subjected to "provocative practices and attacks that exacerbate tensions in the city of Jerusalem."

Amnesty calls on EU to address human rights in Egypt

18 Feb 2022; MEMO: Amnesty International yesterday called on European leaders to put pressure on Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to address the human rights crisis in Egypt. The call came as Sisi is in the Belgium capital Brussels to attend the EU and African Union summit.

"EU leaders must press Sisi to tackle Egypt's human rights crisis and end the unrelenting assault on human rights defenders when they meet him on the sidelines of the [EU-AU] summit," said the human rights organisation.
