India: Karnataka to borrow Rs 33,000 cr for development works

Bengaluru, Sept 15 (PTI) The Karnataka government on Tuesday decided to borrow Rs 33,000 crore to cope with the revenue loss owing to COVID-19 pandemic situation and take up development works, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J C Madhuswamy said.

The state cabinet meeting decided to amend the Fiscal Responsibility Act to increase its borrowing limit from three per cent to the five per cent of the GSDP, utilising the provision proposed by the Centre, he said.

India: Lok Sabha clears bill to amend Essential Commodities Act

New Delhi, Sep 15 (PTI) Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020 which seeks to deregulate food items, including cereals, pulses and onion, a move aimed at transforming the farm sector and raising farmers' income.

Participating in the debate, Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, an ally of the ruling BJP, spoke about "misgivings" and "doubts" among farmers on the bill and two other proposed legislations related to the farm sector.

Aligarh, Sep 15 (PTI) AMU authorities on Tuesday said the university was keen on putting an end to the controversy over a piece of campus land originally owned by freedom fighter Raja Mahendra Pratap.

Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor Tariq Mansoor said the university has always held Raja Mahendra Pratap, an illustrious alumni of AMU, in high regard.

India: Two prisoners escape from UP's Raebareli jail

Raebareli (UP), Sep 15 (PTI) Two prisoners managed to escape from Raebareli district jail here, police said on Tuesday.

Sharda and Ranjeet lodged in the prison for theft and POCSO cases respectively were found missing during routine counting of prisoners on Tuesday morning.

According to police, they were in the quarantine barrack number 10 of the district prison and managed to flee from the bathroom.

Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Sanjeev Tripathi has reached Rae Bareli to inquire into the incident.

India: ABVP activist arrested in Maha for `threatening' minister

Mumbai, Sep 15 (PTI) A functionary of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) was arrested on Tuesday in Maharashtra's Amravati city for allegedly threatening Higher Education Minister Uday Samant.

Ravi Dandge (26), who is `Pradesh Mantri' of the RSS- affiliated student association, was arrested by officials of the Frezerpura police station, a police official said.

India: BJP women's wing to give self-defence training in Bengal

Kolkata, Sep 15 (PTI) The BJP women's wing announced on Tuesday that it will give self-defence training to the women of West Bengal, workshops for which will start on September 17, the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Fifty women from each of the 23 districts of the state will be taught basic self-defence skills by trained experts in the workshops named 'Uma', BJP Mohila Morcha president Agnimitra Paul told PTI.

India: Two more Karnataka ministers test positive for COVID-19

Bengaluru, Sept 16 (PTI) Two more Karnataka Ministers--Basavaraj Bommai and K Gopalaiah-- in the Yediyurappa cabinet have tested positive for coronavirus.

Home Minister Bommai on Wednesday tweeted that he has contracted the virus.

"Our domestic help at home was found infected by the coronavirus yesterday. So, I too underwent a test and found positive for the virus," he said.

Bommai said he was asymptomatic and healthy but as a precautionary measure he has isolated himself at home.

India: COVID-19 tally crosses 5 million mark, 1 million increase in 11 days

New Delhi, Sep 16 (PTI) India's COVID-19 tally of cases galloped past 50 lakh, just 11 days after it crossed 40 lakh with 90,123 infections being reported in a day, while recoveries surged to 39,42,360 on Wednesday pushing the recovery rate to 78.53 per cent, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The total coronavirus cases mounted to 50,20,359, while the death toll climbed to 82,066 with a record 1,290 people succumbing to the disease in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

India: Development of Govindpuri railway station in Kanpur continues

Kanpur: Second busiest railway station in the city, Govindpuri railway station is required to be redeveloped and many proposals to this effect have already been accepted. Throwing light upon this disclosure, Kanpur Central Station Director Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay said Govindpuri railway station has been developing as Terminus Station.

A terminus is a station at the end of a railway line. Trains arriving there have to end its journeys and reverse out of the station. At present, this station is a Junction so long route trains do not stop here.
