New Delhi, Sep 17 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned 70 on Thursday, a landmark birthday that saw greetings pour in from across the world and country with the president and vice president joining international leaders and leading politicians in wishing him and lauding his contribution.

Kashmir: PDP leader and former min Naeem Akhtar released from detention

Srinagar, Sep 17 (PTI) PDP leader and former minister Naeem Akhtar on Thursday said he has been set free by Jammu and Kashmir authorities after 407 days in custody since the abrogation of Article 370 in August last year.

"After 407 days of detention am informed that I am free to move about. Thank you rulers for small mercies while you inflict larger tragedies on our land," the PDP leader said in a sarcastic tweet.

India: New record of 97,894 COVID-19 infections in a day

New Delhi, Sep 17 (PTI) A record single-day increase of 97,894 infections pushed India's COVID-19 tally to over 51 lakh, while the number of people who have recuperated from the disease crossed 40 lakh on Thursday, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The total coronavirus cases mounted to 51,18,253, while the death toll climbed to 83,198 with the virus claiming 1,132 lives in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The total recoveries surged to 40,25,079 while the active cases of COVID-19 crossed 10 lakh for the first time.

India: SP youth workers stage protest in Barra area

Kanpur: Push and shove flashed between Barra police and SP protesters when the Samajwadi Party workers staged a Dharna on the road to protest the government's inaction towards rising unemployment.

They were raising slogans against the government. Not only this but they were also beating thali majira and begging at Patel Chowk in Barra of South city area here today. 

Police came into action due to the flouting of the rules by the protesters. The protesters were later taken to the Barra police station.

India: 'Corona, pollution control & Development works on priority'

Kanpur: Corona, pollution control and development projects would be my priority, said Raj Sekhar, newly appointed Commissioner of Kanpur Division. 

Detailing his prerogatives he made it clear that first and foremost inspection of the Covid hospitals would be conducted. Planning of one week, one fortnight and one month would also be chalked out to deal with the scare of Coronavirus, he added.

Further, he stated that all the preparations must be done beforehand in order to fight the virus spreading fast. 

CBI court to give judgment in Babri mosque demolition case on Sept 30

Lucknow, Sep 16 (PTI) A special CBI court hearing the Babri mosque demolition case will pronounce its judgment on September 30.

Judge SK Yadav has directed all accused to remain present in the court on the day of judgment.

Prominent among the 32 accused are former deputy prime minister L K Advani and BJP leaders M M Joshi, Kalyan Singh, Uma Bharti and Vinay Katiyar.

CBI counsel Lalit Singh told PTI that arguments of the defence and prosecution concluded on September 1 and thereafter the special judge started writing the judgment.

India: Unclaimed body decomposes in Indore hospital

Indore, Sep 16 (PTI) An unclaimed body was found lying in a highly decomposed state in the mortuary of a government hospital in Indore due to alleged negligence of staffers, prompting authorities to order a probe into the matter.

The matter came to light after a picture of the body, which looked liked a skeleton, surfaced on social media.

In the picture, the body was seen lying on a stretcher at the Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital (MYH) in Sanyogitaganj area here in Madhya Pradesh.

India: Total tax collection falls 22.5% till Sep 15

Mumbai, Sep 16 (PTI) Total tax collection of the Centre, including advance tax collection for the second quarter, fell 22.5 per cent to Rs 2,53,532.3 crore till September 15 of the current fiscal as compared to the year-ago period, according to an income tax department source.

The source shared some details about the provisional data.

During the same period ended September 15, 2019, total tax collection stood at Rs 3,27,320.2 crore, the income tax department source from Mumbai zone told PTI over phone on Wednesday.

Kashmir: Man detained by police found dead

Srinagar, Sep 16 (PTI) A man detained by police in Sopore was found dead in a nearby area of Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Wednesday.

Irfan Ahmad Dar (24), was detained by police in Sopore town on Tuesday in connection with an anti-terrorism case, the officials said.

His body was found at Charamundji falling under the jurisdiction of nearby Bomai Police Station on Tuesday evening, the officials said.

They said the body was brought to PCR Hospital at Srinagar on Wednesday for postmortem.

India: Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu tests Covid-19 positive

Itanagar, Sep 15 (PTI) Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said that he tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday and is presently in home isolation in New Delhi.

"I have undergone Covid test RT-PCR and have tested positive for Covid19. I am asymptomatic and feeling healthy," Khandu wrote in his official Twitter handle.

He said that he has self-isolated himself and requested everyone who came in contact with him to adhere to the standard operating procedure.

Khandu went to the national capital on official visit on September 12.
