India: 50-yr-old Dalit woman set on fire, 'critical'

Aurangabad, Feb 5 (PTI) A 50-year-old Dalit woman was set ablaze by a man when she tried to resist his move to enter her house in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district, officials said on Wednesday.

The woman, who suffered about 95 per cent burns in the incident that took place in Andhari village of Sillod tehsil on Sunday midnight, was battling for life at a government hospital here.

India: PM inaugurates DefExpo in Lucknow

Lucknow, Feb 5 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the DefExpo, India's biennial military exhibition that seeks to showcase the potential of the country to become a global defence manufacturing hub.

Delegates from 70 countries and 172 foreign military manufacturers will attend the five-day mega exhibition, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said. As many as 856 Indian defence firms will also showcase their products at the event.

Portfolio of orders for Russian arms supplies to India exceeds $15 bln in 3 years

LUCKNOW /India/, February 5. /TASS/: The portfolio of orders for Russian arms supplies to India has exceeded $15 bln over the past three years, Deputy Director of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation Vladimir Drozhzhov told reporters on Wednesday at the DefExpo 2020 international defense exhibition in Lucknow, India.

"The order portfolio has exceeded $15 bln over the past three years. If we talk about the volume of contracted products, that is, since 1991, this volume has amounted to about $70 bln," he said.

India: PM seeking to use budget to sack Sitharaman: Rahul

New Delhi, Feb 5 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking to use the "useless" budget presented by a "clueless" Nirmala Sitharaman to dump the entire blame on her and sack her.

"Dear PM, The economy has imploded and you must be racking your brains on how to avoid the blame. Use the useless budget presented by clueless Nirmala Ji. Sack her and dump the entire blame on her. Problem solved," he said on Twitter.

India: Main culprit jailed for 20 years, school director for 9 years in 2018 gangrape case

Dehradun, Feb 4 (PTI) A POCSO court here has sentenced a man to 20 years imprisonment and three minors to two and a half years in jail for raping their junior student at a boarding school in 2018.

Special POCSO judge Rama Pandey sentenced a total of eight people in the sensational case on Monday. The school principal Jitendra Kumar Sharma was sentenced to three years in prison, director Lata Gupta and administrative officer Deepak Malhotra and his wife Tannu to nine years in prison each.

India: Seven-year-old girl raped by man in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Feb 3 (PTI) A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man at a village in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Monday.

The 22-year-old man allegedly took the girl to sugarcane fields in Dholri village in Titawi area and raped her on Sunday, the police said.

She was later found crying in the fields by the villagers who took the girl to her home and informed the police, they said.

A case has been registered against the accused and the minor sent for medical examination, the police said.

India: Kerala Assembly junks UDF resolution seeking recall of Governor

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 3 (PTI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday said there was no need to seek the recall of Governor Arif Mohammed Khan just because he had a different opinion on CAA as the state Assembly dropped an opposition UDF resolution pressing the demand.

The assembly accepted the decision of its Business Advisory Committee (BAC) not to discuss the notice for the resolution moved by Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala, asking the President to recall the Governor over his stand on the Citizenship Amendment Act.
