Kenya, Egypt sign defence deal as Cairo moves to consolidate its position on Ethiopia dam

27 May 2021; MEMO: Kenya and Egypt have signed a technical agreement on defence cooperation as tensions run high in the Renaissance Dam (GERD) negotiations which have been ongoing for years with no resolution.

Egypt has worked hard to mobilise African support for its position on the dam and has signed similar agreements with Burundi and Uganda.

Egyptian, German leaders discuss Palestinian, Libyan issues

CAIRO, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel held a video meeting on Wednesday and discussed Middle East issues including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Libyan crisis.

The Egyptian president emphasized the need to work immediately on resuming direct talks between Palestinians and Israelis to resolve their decades-long conflict, said the Egyptian presidency in a statement.

USA: Blinken arrives in Egypt to shore up Gaza cease-fire efforts

CAIRO (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Egypt on Wednesday on the next leg of a diplomatic mission aimed at shoring up a cease-fire that ended an 11-day war between Israel and Hamas.

Blinken was scheduled to hold talks with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, Foreign Minister Sameh Shukry and the country’s chief spy Abbas Kamel.

Blinken wrapped up extensive talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, and is scheduled to travel to Amman, Jordan late Wednesday to meet with the Jordanian king and other officials.

Egypt reduces compensation claim on Ever Given to 550 mln USD

CAIRO, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Egypt offered to cut its compensation claim down to 550 million U.S. dollars against the impounded Ever Given vessel that blocked the Suez Canal in March, the canal authority chief Osama Rabie said on Tuesday.

"We reduced the value of the required compensation by 40 percent from 916 million U.S. dollars to 550 million U.S. dollars after we obtained the estimated financial value of the goods on the ship," Rabie said in a statement.

In April, an Egyptian court ordered the owners of Ever Given to pay 916 million U.S. dollars in compensation.

Egypt receives raw materials to produce Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine

CAIRO, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Egypt has received the first batch of the raw materials to manufacture China's Sinovac vaccine, said the Chinese embassy in Egypt on Sunday.

Along with the Sinovac raw materials, a new shipment of China's Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines also arrived at the Cairo International Airport on Friday, according to a Chinese embassy's statement.

Egypt: Suez Canal’s claim over once-stuck ship referred by court

CAIRO (AP) — An Egyptian appeals court said Sunday it lacks jurisdiction to look into the Suez Canal Authority’s demands to uphold financial claims that led to the seizure of the cargo ship that blocked the waterway in March.

The authority and the ship’s owner dispute who was at fault when the Ever Given ran aground in the canal linking the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea and how much compensation should be paid.

Egypt Sends 130 Truckloads Of Aid To Gaza

CAIRO, May 23 (NNN-MENA) – Egypt sent 130 truckloads of aid supplies to the bordering Gaza Strip late Friday, including foodstuffs, medicines, clothes and household essentials, the Egyptian presidency said.

The 2,500-tonne aid package, provided by the Tahya Misr Fund, under the presidency, also covers such supplies as mattresses, disinfectants, face masks, and baby formula.

Egypt discusses developments in Palestine with Bahrain, Norway

CAIRO, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Bahraini counterpart Abdullatif Al Zayani discussed on Saturday the latest developments in Palestine.

During a phone conversation, the two ministers emphasized the importance of continuing coordination between the two countries regarding developments in the Palestinian territories, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
