Egypt forcibly disappears female activist

14 Oct 2019; MEMO: Egyptian undercover forces have kidnapped female activist Israa Abdelfattah from a street in the capital Cairo, Arab48 reported.

According to the activist Mohamed Dalah, the undercover forces stopped him along with 41-year-old Abdelfattah and put each one in a separate car.

“After an hour, they released me at a highway,” he wrote on Facebook, noting that he was beaten before he was released.

Arab League Chief Says Turkey’s Operation In Syria “Military Invasion”

CAIRO, Oct 13 (NNN-MENA) – Arab League (AL) Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, described the ongoing Turkish military operation in northern Syria as a “military invasion.”

Aboul-Gheit’s remarks came, during an AL emergency meeting at the level of foreign ministers, which kicked off Saturday in Cairo, to discuss the Turkish military operation in Syria.

“What Turkey is doing in Syria is a military offensive that violates international legitimacy,” Aboul-Gheit said, accusing Ankara of committing “war crimes and crimes against humanity in Syria.”

Palestinian PM in Egypt to discuss ‘economic disengagement’ from Israel

10 Oct 2019; MEMO: Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh praised Egyptian efforts to support the Palestinian economy during a visit to Cairo, reported Asharq Al-Awsat.

Shtayyeh was speaking at a press conference alongside his Egyptian counterpart Mostafa Madbouly.

Egypt activist Alaa Abdul Fattah beaten in prison

10 Oct 2019; MEMO: Prominent Egyptian activist Alaa Abdul Fattah has told his lawyers that he has been beaten, threatened and robbed inside prison.

Alaa is one of the key figures of the 2011 revolution. He was released from jail in March this year after serving five years for allegedly organising an illegal protest. A condition of his release was that he would be on probation for five years and was required to sleep in a police station every night.

Egypt, Greece, Cyprus condemn Turkish military operation in Syria

CAIRO, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Egypt, Greece and Cyprus on Tuesday slammed the military operation announced by Turkey to be launched soon in Syrian territories.

The remarks came in a final communique after a tripartite summit in Cairo attended by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, according to Egypt's state-run Ahram Online news website.

Palestine becomes member of Arab League’s Human Rights Committee

4 Oct 2019; MEMO: Palestine yesterday gained membership of the Human Rights Committee of the Arab League.

The State of Palestine will be represented by Legal Adviser Majdi Hardan from the Ministry of Justice.

In accordance with the membership, Palestine will be required to report on human rights situations; in particular violations of human rights by the Israeli occupation authorities.

Sisi resorts to subsidies to contain Egyptians’ rage

2 Oct 2019; MEMO: Egypt’s supply ministry yesterday said it would bring back of 1.8 million Egyptians to the so-called “smart-card system” for subsidised goods.

In an official statement, the ministry added that it was receiving citizens’ grievances through “the supply offices in the different Egyptian governorates.”

The Egyptian supply minister, Ali Al-Muselhi, has long urged “all eligible Egyptian citizens to apply and register in the subsidy system.”
