Demonstrators clash with Egyptian security forces in rare anti-Sisi protests

22 September 2019; AFP: Egyptian security forces clashed with hundreds of anti-government protesters in the port city of Suez on Saturday, firing tear gas and live rounds, said several residents who participated in the demonstrations.

A heavy security presence was also maintained in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the epicentre of Egypt's 2011 revolution, after protests in several cities called for the removal of general-turned-president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Egypt Sends Aid To South Sudan To Support Peace

CAIRO, Sept 15 (NNN-MENA) – Egypt sent aid shipments to Juba, as part of its efforts to support the implementation of the 2018 peace agreement in South Sudan, Egyptian Foreign Ministry said.

Three shipments of aid, including medicine, tents and military uniforms, were sent to Juba consecutively on Sept 11, 12 and 13, the ministry said in a statement.

Egyptian tortured to death in police station

13 Sep 2019; MEMO: A detainee being held at a police station in Giza governorate was beaten to death on Tuesday, reports Masrawy.

The Interior Ministry has denied Karim Al-Khawaja, 45, died at the hands of police and instead say he had a heart attack.

Sources told Masrawy that Al-Khawaja was serving a one-year prison sentence for drug charges but was appealing his sentence.

Egypt sentences 11 senior Brotherhood leaders to life for ‘spying for Hamas’

12 Sep 2019; MEMO: Cairo Criminal Court yesterday sentenced 11 senior Muslim Brotherhood leaders, including Supreme Guide Mohammed Badei, to life sentence in prison for alleged spying for Hamas, Quds Press reported.

Former Parliament Speaker Saad al-Katatni, deputy Brotherhood Guide Khairat Al-Shater, Issam Al-Aryan, Mohammed Al-Beltajo were among those sentenced.

Egypt: Sisi government detains son of prominent journalist

11 Sep 2019; MEMO: Egyptian journalist Magdi Shendi, editor of Al-Mashhad weekly, has said that the Egyptian security forces stormed his house at dawn on Tuesday to arrest him. However, when they did not find Shendi they arrested his son as a means to create leverage and ensure that he surrender.

Israel “Playing With Fire” With Attacks On Arab Territories, AL Chief Warns

CAIRO, Sept 11 (NNN-MENA) – Arab League (AL) Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, warned Israel against “playing with fire” with its recent attacks on some Arab countries.

“Israel now enjoys a political cover, provided by the United States, which enables it to attack Arab territories, as we have seen in recent weeks,” Aboul-Gheit said, at the AL foreign ministers meeting in Cairo.

He added that the purpose behind these aggressions is “electoral propaganda,” referring to the Sept 17 elections due to be held in Israel.
