India: Rahul says visiting Kashmir feels like coming home

Srinagar, Aug 10 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said he feels like "coming home" when he visits the Kashmir Valley as he pitched for restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood before holding assembly elections.

Addressing his party workers after inaugurating a new party headquarters here, a visibly emotional Gandhi said, "My family lives in Delhi. Before that my family lived in Allahabad. And before Allahabad, my family lived here."

Indian army helicopter crashes into Ranjit Sagar Dam lake

Kathua/Chandigarh, Aug 3 (PTI) An Army helicopter crashed into the Ranjit Sagar Dam lake in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua on Tuesday, prompting the authorities to launch a massive search operation to trace the missing, an official said.

The dam is located about 30 km from Pathankot in Punjab and the incident took place around 10.30 pm.

Kathua Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) R C Kotwal told reporters that the forces and boats were mobilised for the search operation, after which some pieces of chopper were found, confirming it to be an Army helicopter.

India: 2 Kashmiris killed by Indian Sec Forces in Pulwama district of Indian Administered Kashmir

Srinagar, 31 July 2021: Two Kashmiris were killed on Saturday by Indian security forces in Pulwama district of the Indian Administered Kashmir, Indian officials said.

Indian Security force’s spokesperson claimed that one of the separatist was of Pakistani origin.

India: Hurriyat demands Mirwaiz Umar Farooq's release

Srinagar, Jul 29 (PTI) The Hurriyat Conference on Thursday demanded the release of its chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, saying his fundamental rights and civil liberties stand completely curbed for the last two years.

The demand for the release of Mirwaiz was made following a meeting of the executive committee of the Hurriyat Conference held at the residence of Bilal Lone.

"Hurriyat Conference executive members seek his (Mirwaiz) immediate release from illegal arbitrary house detention by the state authorities," the amalgam said in a statement.

India: 'No follow-up results' after meeting with PM: Abdullah

Srinagar, Jul 25 (PTI) A month after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's outreach to mainstream leaders of Jammu and Kashmir, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah said on Sunday that there has been "no follow-up results" on the ground.

Adbullah said this in reference to the prime minister's remarks at the June 24 meeting in New Delhi that he wanted to win the hearts of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and remove "Dilli ki doori" (the distance from Delhi) and "dil ki doori" (distance between hearts).

India: Centre has 'gone rogue': Mehbooba on Pegasus issue

Srinagar, Jul 23 (PTI) PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday attacked the Centre over the Pegasus snooping issue, saying it has "gone rogue" and is "brazenly subverting" basic human rights.

"A spyware used against terrorists has been weaponised to deal with political opponents & dissenters. BJP has taken a leaf out of how Britishers would suspect & treat Indians during the colonial era. GOI has gone rogue & is brazenly subverting basic human rights, she tweeted.

India: J&K authorities backtrack on animal slaughter ban on Eid-ul-Adha, say advice was misinterpreted

Srinagar, Jul 16 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Friday said there was no ban on bovine slaughter in the union territory, clarifying that the earlier order seeking to prohibit illegal killing of cows and camels on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha was issued by the animal welfare board for implementation of various acts concerning animal slaughter.

India: Name for High Court of Jammu and Kashmir changed - again

New Delhi, Jul 17 (PTI) The "long-winding and cumbersome" nomenclature 'Common High Court of UT of Jammu and Kashmir and UT of Ladakh' has been changed to 'High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh', according to an order.

President Ram Nath Kovind has signed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Removal of Difficulties) Order, 2021, to effect the change. The order was notified by the Department of Justice in the Law Ministry on Friday.
