India: Magisterial inquiry ordered into Shopian encounter

Srinagar, Jun 2 (PTI) Authorities in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday ordered a magisterial inquiry into an encounter between militants and security forces last month in which three ultras were killed, officials said.

In an order, the Shopian additional district magistrate, who is also the inquiry officer, asked people to share information about the anti-militancy operation that took place at Kanigam in Shopian on May 5-6.

India: DRDO's 500-bed Covid hospital inaugurated in Jammu

Jammu, May 29 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday inaugurated the Defence Research and Development Organisation's (DRDO) 500-bed Covid hospital in Jammu to ramp up the healthcare infrastructure to effectively deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

Of the total 500 beds here at Bhagwati Nagar Centre, 125 would be Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, while others would be a set of Covid beds with 24 hours oxygen facility.

India: J&K pesticide factory gutted in fire

Udhampur, May 28 (PTI) A pesticide factory was gutted in a fire in the industrial area of Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district, officials said on Friday, adding no casualties were reported in the incident.

It broke out in Dhanuka chemical factory at Batal-Ballian industrial estate around midnight on Thursday, they said, adding eight fire tenders were pressed into service along with the army and the air force.

The fire engulfed the whole pesticide factory, which was one of the biggest in the union territory.

India: Black fungus declared an epidemic in J&K

Srinagar, May 24 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Monday declared black fungus (Mucormycosis) an epidemic in the state.

A notification regarding the same was issued by Health and Medical Education Department of the Union Territory under Section 2 of the Epidemic Disease Act 1897.

This comes few days after the Centre directed all the states and UTs to make black fungus a notifiable disease.

India: BJP veteran Chaman Lal Gupta dies of post-Covid complications

New Delhi, May 18 (PTI) Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has condoled the demise of former Union minister and BJP veteran Chaman Lal Gupta.

Gupta (87) died at his Gandhi Nagar residence in Jammu on Tuesday after a prolonged illness, days after undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at a hospital, his family said.

He is survived by his two sons and a daughter.

India: J-K gets 7 new oxygen plants from Germany

Srinagar, May 17 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir on Monday received seven new imported oxygen plants from Germany with a cumulative generation capacity of 7,100 litres per minute (LPM).

The oxygen plants were carried by an Indian Air Force aircraft from Munich in Germany and reached Srinagar Airport in the afternoon.

India: Azad expresses concern over high COVID deaths in J&K

Jammu, May 15 (PTI) Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad discussed the coronavirus situation with Jammu and Kashmir unit president G A Mir on Saturday, expressing concern over the high number of fatalities.

Days after being nominated as the head of party's COVID Task Force, Azad also reviewed the efforts of the Lt Governor Manoj Sinha-led administration to tackle the pandemic, a party spokesperson said.

India: BJP leader performs 'havan' in J&K to ward off coronavirus

Jammu, May 15 (PTI) The BJP's Jammu and Kashmir vice president Yudhvir Sethi performed a 'havan' on Saturday to "ward off" the coronavirus, a party spokesman said.

The fire ritual was performed following all COVID-19-related guidelines, the spokesman said, adding that Sethi was joined by party colleagues Anil Masoom, Ajit Yogi, Parveen Kerni, Pawan Sharma, Roshan Lal Sharma and Satish Kumar.

India: 23 prison inmates test COVID positive in J-K

Srinagar, May 11 (PTI) Twenty-three prison inmates in Jammu and Kashmir have tested positive for COVID-19 and they are being provided necessary medical treatment, officials said on Tuesday.

Out of 4,572 inmates lodged in 13 jails across Jammu and Kashmir, only 23 have tested positive, the officials said.

They said 21 of these detainees are lodged at District Jail Kathua while one each were lodged in Central Jail Jammu and District jail Jammu.

The officials said the COVID-affected prisoners were being provided the necessary medical care.
