India: Nine shops gutted in fire in J-K's Poonch

Jammu, Jun 19 (PTI) At least nine shops were gutted in a major blaze in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district on Saturday, while another fire at a J&K Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC) yard here burnt a parked bus and dozens of tyres, officials said.

The fire in the Mandi area of Poonch broke out from a shop at the Loaran bus stand around 4.45 am and engulfed nearby shops, they said.

Fire tenders rushed to the spot were able to put off the blaze after several hours of hectic efforts, the officials said.

India: 18 houses gutted in fire in J&K

Srinagar, Jun 11 (PTI) At least 18 houses were gutted in a blaze that broke out in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, leaving 30 families homeless, officials said on Friday.

The fire broke out late on Thursday at Sweeper Colony in the Noorbagh area, they said, adding that police, fire and emergency services department were pressed into service to douse it.

The Army's fire tenders were also used to extinguish the flames, they said.

India: Rape accused chargesheeted in J-K's Reasi

Jammu, Jun 8 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday said it filed a chargesheet against a man for allegedly raping a woman several times on the pretext of marriage in Reasi district.

The chargesheet against S Harjit Singh was filed in a local court in a case registered against him in 2018 under various sections of the Ranbir Penal Code, a police spokesman said.

India: Ladakh reserves subordinate service jobs for locals

Leh, Jun 9 (PTI) Ladakh administration has reserved all subordinate service jobs in the union territory for the local residents, a development welcomed by BJP but dismissed by an opposition leader on the plea that the rules are full of flaws .

In a notification issued by the Labour and employment department on Tuesday, the administration announced the Union Territory of Ladakh Employment (Subordinate) Service Recruitment Rules 2021 , reserving jobs exclusively for the locals.

India: J-K gets nine medical oxygen plants from Europe

Srinagar, Jun 7 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir on Monday received nine medical oxygen plants from Europe which will be installed in various health facilities across the Union territory amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

The fresh consignment was received by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Pandurang K Pole, an official spokesman said.

Sharing the details, Pole said out of the nine oxygen generation plants, five would be installed in Kashmir, while the rest would be installed in Jammu division.

India: Ladakh signs MoU with CESL for 5 MW solar power project

Leh, Jun 5 (PTI) The Union Territory of Ladakh on Saturday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Convergence Energy Services Ltd for setting up of 5-MW Solar Power Plant at Zanskar in Kargil, an official spokesman said.

The signing ceremony coinciding with World Environment Day was held digitally between Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil and CESL in the presence of Lt Governor R K Mathur, the spokesman said.

India: Rape accused arrested after two years in J-K

Jammu, Jun 5 (PTI) A rape accused was arrested on Saturday after a two-year hunt from Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

Ravinder Kumar alias Rahul went underground after a case under section 376 (punishment for rape) was registered against him at Domana police station here in 2019, a police official said.

"An input was received about the presence of the criminal in his home town Reasi and subsequently he was arrested by a special police team," he said.

The official said further investigation is underway.

India: Progress should not come at environment's cost: Abdullah

Srinagar, Jun 5 (PTI) National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said the nation's progress must not come at the cost of the environment.

He also expressed grief over the killing of a four-year-old girl by a leopard in Budgam and demanded action against erring officers.

In his message on the World Environment Day, Abdullah said reckless human activity in the form of deforestation, water and air pollution and overuse of natural resources has imperilled the natural balance in the global environment.

India: BJP leader shot dead in J-K

Srinagar, Jun 2 (PTI) Militants shot dead a BJP councillor in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday night when he was visiting his friend's house in the Tral area of Pulwama district, officials said here.

A group of three militants opened indiscriminate fire at BJP leader Rakesh Pandita around 10.15 pm, a police spokesperson said, adding that his friend's daughter also suffered injuries and was hospitalised in a critical condition.
