India: 14 booked under new anti-conversion law in UP's Mau

Mau (UP), Dec 4 (PTI) Fourteen people have been booked under the new anti-conversion law here, police said on Friday.

Shabab Khan aka Rahul (38) and 13 of his acquaintances were booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020, police said.

India: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corp polls: BJP ahead in postal ballots

Hyderabad, Dec 4 (PTI) The BJP was leading over its rivalsin postal ballots which were taken up first in the counting of votes on Friday in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections.

The BJP is leading in around 80 wards while the ruling TRS is ahead in around 20.

However, the party lead position would be known as the votes cast in the ballot boxes are counted.

Ballot papers were used in the election to the 150- ward city civic body on December 1.

India: Lucknow police stops interfaith wedding

Lucknow, Dec 4 (PTI) Days after the Uttar Pradesh government promulgated a stringent anti-conversion law, the police here stopped an interfaith wedding, saying the couple did not complete legal formalities.

The families of the bride and the groom were called to Para police station and informed about the new law. They decided to defer the wedding and follow the norms laid for an interfaith marriage under the Special Marriage Act, the police said.

India: Farmers' protest on at Noida-Delhi border for fourth day

Noida (UP), Dec 4 (PTI) Scores of farmers opposing the Centre's new farm laws stayed put at the Noida-Delhi border for the fourth day on the trot on Friday, even as a key road connecting Uttar Pradesh and the national capital remained partially shut due to the stir.

The protesters, including some women, are camping at one carriageway of the Delhi-Noida Link Road at the Chilla border, while some are demonstrating at the nearby Dalit Prerna Sthal near the Mahamaya Flyover, according to officials.

India: Farmers' protest: More routes connecting UP-Delhi closed

New Delhi, Dec 3 (PTI) Police on Thursday closed routes on two national highways connecting Ghaziabad to Delhi as farmers remained unyielding on their demand for scrapping the new farm laws and stayed put at the national capital's borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

The protesting farmers had on Wednesday threatened to block other roads of Delhi if their demands were not met.

The local police has closed the routes on NH-9 and NH-24 from Ghaziabad to Delhi. On NH-1, both sides of the route have been closed near Shani Mandir, the Delhi Traffic Police tweeted.

Indian Union ministers meet farmers' groups to break deadlock

New Delhi, Dec 3 (PTI) Farmers' groups met three Union ministers on Thursday for fourth round of talks amid an ongoing protest seeking repeal of the new farm laws.

Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Railways, Commerce and Food Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Commerce Som Parkash, who is an MP from Punjab, are holding talks with the representatives of 35 farmers' unions at the Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital.

The government said that the meeting started in the afternoon and discussions are being held in a cordial atmosphere.

India: Parkash Singh Badal returns Padma award over farm laws

Chandigarh, Dec 3 (PTI) Akali stalwart and former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday returned his Padma Vibhushan award in protest against the Centre's farm laws.

I am who I am because of the people, especially the common farmer. Today when he has lost more than his honour, I see no point in holding on to the Padma Vibhushan honour, the Shiromani Akali Dal leader said.

India: Man arrested for attempting to rape minor in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Dec 3 (PTI) A man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a minor girl at Morna village here, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place Wednesday evening when the 12-year-old girl had gone to attend a wedding event, SHO Sube Singh said.

The accused took the girl to a nearby sugarcane field and tried to rape her. The girl, however, raised an alarm and the villagers caught hold of the accused.

He was then handed over to the police, the officer said.

India: Leopard hiding inside Dehradun airport

Rishikesh, Dec 2 (PTI) A leopard, which had strayed into the Jollygrant airport and hid itself in a pipe inside its premises, has been rescued by Forest Department personnel, officials said on Wednesday.

Terrified by the high decibel sound of incoming and outgoing flights, the sub-adult leopard, which had hid itself in a pipe near the new terminal building, remained cowering inside it throughout the day, Sub-Divisional Forest Officer GS Martolia said.
