Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan agree to meet in Washington for final deal on Nile dam: FM

CAIRO, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Foreign and water ministers of Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan agreed to meet in Washington on Jan. 28-29 to reach "a final agreement," aimed at paving the way for the filling and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on their shared Nile river, Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

Egypt launches largest military base in Middle East

16 Jan 2019; MEMO: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi yesterday inaugurated Bernice military base, the largest in the region of the red sea, official media has reported.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by several Arab and foreign officials and ministers, including the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Armed Forces, Mohammed bin Zayed Sultan Al-Nahyan.

After torture, Egypt prisoner attempts suicide in prison

14 Jan 2019; MEMO: A detainee inside Egypt’s notorious Scorpion prison has attempted suicide due to the severe torture he endured and the harsh detention conditions, a leaked letter from inside the prison revealed.

Al Jazeera news channel reported the letter as saying that detainee, Ahmad Abdullah Dabaan, was taken to hospital for treatment before being returned to prison despite his critical condition, because the prison administration was afraid that the suicide attempt would be made public.

Libyan agreement envisages UN control, freeze on deployment of Turkish forces — media

CAIRO, January 13. /TASS/: The agreement on ceasefire in Libya, to be signed in Moscow on Monday, envisages the pullback of conflicting parties, a moratorium on the deployment of Turkish forces and international control of the observance of agreements, the television channel Al Arabiya quoted its sources as saying. The United Nations and Russia will be responsible for the observance of the ceasefire.

Egypt FM to visit Algeria over development in Libya

CAIRO, Jan 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry is heading to Algeria over the recent escalations in Libya, said the country’s Foreign Ministry in a statement.

“Shoukry carries a message from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune,” said the Foreign Ministry in a Thursday statement.

Shoukry will discuss with the Algerian foreign minister means of enhancing and pushing forward the mutual ties in all fields as well as consult over the Libyan crisis, the statement added.

China's battle against poverty "a huge success": Egyptian parliamentarian

CAIRO, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's efforts in fighting poverty has been "a huge success", making the country a major contributor to the world's poverty reduction endeavors, said Tariq al-Kholy, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Committee in the Egyptian House of Representatives.

By continuing with such efforts, China is expected to wipe out extreme poverty in 2020, al-Kholy told Xinhua in a recent exclusive interview.

High poverty rates are recorded in many countries, the Chinese experience in tackling the severe problem is an "inspiration to the world," he said.

Egyptair suspends flights to Baghdad for 3 days: statement

(Reuters) - EgyptAir, Egypt’s flag carrier, said on Tuesday it will suspend its flights to the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, for three days starting from Wednesday because of the instable security situation in Iraq.

The suspension, which will continue until Friday, was taken “for the safety of our passengers and planes and until the security situation stabilizes in the city,” the company said in a statement.
