Survivors say Greek Coast Guard 'directly involved' in deadly shipwreck: EU lawmaker

16 June 2023; MEMO: Survivors have said the Greek Coast Guard was "directly involved and might have caused" the deadly shipwreck off the southern coast of Greece, according to an EU lawmaker, Anadolu Agency reports.

"Greek authorities knew that a ship carrying asylum seekers is in danger in their waters, but didn't start the rescue for hours," Erik Marquardt, a German Member of the European Parliament from the Green Group, told Anadolu.

Sudan: 2.2m people displaced by conflict, says UN

15 June 2023; MEMO: More than 2.2 million people have been displaced in Sudan since the outbreak of fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, Anadolu reported on Wednesday.

According to the International Organisation for Migration, the records show that 1,670,991 people have been displaced internally and 528,147 have fled to neighbouring countries.

This came in response to Israeli plans to build more than 4,000 settlement units in the occupied Palestinian West Bank.

US Forces reinforce presence in oil and gas field areas

12 June 2023; MEMO: The United States has sent military reinforcements to its bases in Syria's northeastern Al-Hasakah province, Anadolu news agency reported citing local sources yesterday.

A military convoy of 40 vehicles arrived in the province after crossing into Syria through Al-Waleed border terminal with Iraq on Sunday, the sources said.

India: UP 'conversion' case: Maha cops get transit remand to take prime accused to Ghaziabad

Thane, Jun 12 (PTI) Maharashtra's Thane police was on Monday granted transit remand by a local court to take Shahnawaz Khan, the prime accused in an Uttar Pradesh case allegedly involving religious conversion of youngsters through an online gaming app, to Ghaziabad, an official said.

Khan, who hails from Mumbra township here, was arrested from a relative's place in Alibag in Raigad district on Sunday, the official said.

"He is being taken to Ghaziabad from Thane by road," the police official said.

Turkiye forces block group of 40 migrants sent by Greece

11 June 2023; MEMO: Turkish security forces blocked the entry of a group of around 40 migrants who were attempted to be sent to Turkiye by Greece on Thursday, the Turkish National Defense Ministry said, Anadolu reports.

In a statement, the ministry said that Turkish troops detected a group of approximately 40 people advancing toward the Turkish border in the northwestern Edirne province.
