Australia Labor Party passes resolution urging government to recognise state of Palestine

19 June 2023; MEMO: The Australian Labor Party passed a resolution yesterday, during the final day of the Victorian party conference, calling for the federal Australian government to recognise the state of Palestine.

"In re-affirming the resolution carried at the 2018 and 2021 national conferences, the Albanese government will join with 138 countries and the Vatican, which have already done so," the motion read.

More than 1,000 refugees cross English Channel in 3 days

20 June 2023; MEMO: More than 1,000 people have crossed the English Channel in small boats since Friday, according to figures released by the UK Home Office.

So far this month, over 2,500 have crossed the English Channel from France and over 10,000 since the beginning of the year.

At the beginning of June, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said his plan to cut the number of migrants arriving was working.

Israel: Netanyahu to advance judicial overhaul this week

18 June 2023; MEMO: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday his government will move ahead with its plans for a judicial overhaul this week, according to local media, reports Anadolu Agency.

Speaking at a weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said his government will convene later this week to start "practical steps" towards implementing the judicial reform plans.

Israel to demolish Palestinian primary school in West Bank

19 June 2023; MEMO: An Israeli court yesterday ruled that the Umm Qassah mixed primary school in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron must be demolished within a week.

The school's principal, Youssef Al-Basaita, told Palestinian media that Israeli authorities had notified him of the demolition last year, adding that they had prevented the school from adding new classrooms.

US seeks answers after Israel fails to charge soldier over death of elderly American citizen

15 June 2023; MEMO: The US yesterday announced that it is requesting Israel provide it with further information after the military said no criminal charges will be filed against soldiers who killed an 80-year-old Palestinian-American last year during a raid in the occupied West Bank.

Greece was alerted about migrant boat, Frontex chief confirms

16 June 2023; MEMO: EU's Border Agency had alerted Greek authorities about a migrant boat a day before it capsized off the coast of Greece, its chief, Hans Leijtens, has confirmed, Anadolu Agency reports.

"My colleagues detected on Tuesday a fishing boat, heading for Greece, with around 600 people aboard," Frontex chief, Leijtens, said in an interview with German daily, Suddeutsche Zeitung.

Khashoggi widow sues Israel spyware company NSO over phone hacking

16 June 2023; MEMO: The widow of murdered Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, says in a lawsuit that surveillance software built by the Israeli surveillance company, NSO Group, was used to spy on her messages in the months leading up to her husband's death, Reuters reports.
