Tunisia: Washington warns that new constitution could compromise human rights

27 July 2022; MEMO: The US State Department warned on Tuesday that the new Tunisian constitution could "compromise" human and fundamental rights in the North African country. A referendum on the draft document was held yesterday at the insistence of President Kais Saied, who will have near absolute power in Tunisia if it is supported by the majority of citizens who voted.

Protests in Belgium against Israel's participation in cycling race

Jordan King to Israel PM: Palestinians must join regional projects

27 July 2022; MEMO: Jordan's King told Israel's visiting Prime Minister on Wednesday that Palestinians should be part of US-sponsored regional economic projects to underpin stability in the Middle East, Reuters reports.

Jordanian officials say Amman has been pushing Israel to include the Palestinians in water-for-energy deals that both countries are considering and which Gulf Arab countries could help finance.

Family of Al Jazeera reporter killed by Israeli army meets Blinken to demand justice

26 July 2022; MEMO: The family of slain journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, demanded justice for the Al Jazeera reporter's killing ahead of a meeting in Washington with US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

Lina Abu Akleh, her niece, posted a video on Twitter from outside the State Department saying that she and other family members "are here to demand justice for Shireen".

Israel resumes settlement plans suspended prior to US president's visit

27 July 2022; MEMO: Israeli Interior Ministry's District Planning Committee for Jerusalem on Monday advanced plans for more than 700 new illegal settlement units suspended due to US President Joe Biden's visit to Israel, local media reported.

The committee also accepted the submission of a plan for 1,446 settlement units that would be located between the Jewish settlements of Har Homa and Givat Hamatos.

UAE: Most Emiratis oppose normalisation with Israel says academic

Israel registers Palestinians' properties in occupied Jerusalem for Jewish settlers

26 July 2022; MEMO: Israeli NGO Planners for Planning Rights (BIMKOM) has revealed that the occupation authorities have registered properties owned by Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem for illegal Jewish settlers, Anadolu reported on Monday. BIMKOM promotes democracy and human rights related to planning issues.

India: Mathura court reserves decision over appointing commissioner to survey Shahi Idgah mosque

Mathura, Jul 22 (PTI) A court in Mathura has reserved its decision over the appointment of a commissioner to survey the Shahi Idgah mosque near the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple to verify temple signs in it.

The hearing was held in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Sanjay Chaudhary, said Devkinandan Sharma and Deepak Sharma, the advocates of Dinesh Sharma, who is the treasurer of the plaintiff Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha.

France: MPs sign draft resolution condemning Israel's apartheid

23 July 2022; MEMO: Some 38 far-left French MPs have signed a draft resolution condemning Israel's "institutionalisation of an apartheid regime against Palestinian people," news agencies reported on Friday.

The draft resolution was originally submitted on 13 July by Communist MP Jean-Paul Lecocq but stirred a public debate on Friday.
