Trump says peace deal with Taliban “very close” as partial truce announced

WASHINGTON, Feb 14 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Pres Donald Trump said the United States and the Taliban were nearing a peace agreement — although it was not clear if he was talking about the limited pause in hostilities agreed with the guerrillas or something broader.

“I think we’re very close. I think there’s a good chance that we’ll have a deal and we’ll see,” Trump said, more than 18 years after the US invaded to overthrow the then Taliban government in the wake of the September 11 attacks.

US warship in Arabian Sea seizes weapons suspected bound for Yemen’s Houthis

WASHINGTON, Feb 14 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A United States Navy warship seized weapons believed to be of Iranian “design and manufacture”, including 150 anti-tank guided missiles and three Iranian surface-to-air missiles, the US military said.

In a statement, the military said the guided-missile cruiser Normandy boarded a dhow, a traditional sailing vessel, in the Arabian Sea on Sunday.

Libyan families sue Haftar and UAE in US

US charges four Chinese military officers in 2017 Equifax hack

WASHINGTON, Feb 11 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The United States has charged four Chinese military hackers in the 2017 breach of the Equifax credit reporting agency that affected nearly 150 million American citizens, Attorney General William Barr said.

“This was a deliberate and sweeping intrusion into the private information of the American people,” Barr said in announcing the indictments of four members of the Chinese Liberation Army in connection with one of the largest data breaches in U.S. history.

Trump ousts 2 key impeachment witnesses

Washington, Feb 8 (PTI) US President Donald Trump has fired two officials who had testified before the Congressional committee during the impeachment process by the House of Representatives, three days after he was acquitted by the Senate of all charges.

The two officers are the Gordon Sondland, the US ambassador to the European Union, and Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, a Ukraine expert on the National Security Council of the White House.

China doing good job on coronavirus: Trump

Washington, Feb 08 (PTI) China is doing a good job on its fight against the deadly coronavirus that has taken the lives of large number of people, President Donald Trump has said, adding that the US was helping them out.

"China is working very hard. Late last night, I had a very good talk with President Xi and we talked mostly about the coronavirus," Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday. "I think they are doing a very professional job."

US worried over Guinea’s referendum vote, questions fairness of process

WASHINGTON, Feb 8 (NNN-AFRICANEWS) — The United States has officially reacted to plans by Guinean president Alpha Conde to revise the consitution in a move aimed at running for a third term in office.

Condé announced in a statement this week that the country will hold a two-way vote on March 1 – for legislative elections and a controversial constitutional referendum.

US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, posted on Twitter that America was “concerned over Guinea’s current plan to hold legislative elections and a constitutional referendum on March 1.
