New EU chief names team for climate and global challenges

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union must lead the fight against climate change, build ties with the United States and Africa and face up to a more assertive China, the incoming chief of the EU executive said on Tuesday.

EU Commission Proposes Providing 500 Million Euros To Jordan

AMMAN, Sept 10 (NNN-PETRA) – The European Commission proposed a new Macro-Financial Assistance (MFA) programme for Jordan worth up to 500 million euros (552.67 million U.S. dollars), a delegation to Jordan said, Monday.

The proposed financial assistance aims to provide support to the ambitious Jordanian reform agenda, promoting jobs, growth and investment for the benefit of the people of Jordan, the EU delegation in Jordan said.

EU ambassadors agree six-month prolongation of anti-Russian sanctions

BRUSSELS, September 4. /TASS/: The permanent representatives of the EU’s 28 member-countries have agreed on a six-month prolongation of restrictive measures against Russian individuals and legal entities that were due to expire on September 15, a source in the EU Council told TASS on Wednesday.

According to the diplomat, the EU Council will officially approve this decision next week. Then it will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union and enter into force.

EU believes inviting Russia to rejoin G7 would be sign of weakness

BRUSSELS, Aug 22 (NNN-SPUTNIK-BERNAMA) — The European Union (EU) is against inviting Russia to the G7 format and thus resuming the G8 format until the country addresses the issues that led to its exclusion back in 2014, Sputnik news agency reported, quoting  a high-ranking source in EU institutions on Thursday.

US President Donald Trump told reporters on Tuesday, ahead of the G7 summit in France’s Biarritz, that he would support Russia’s possible return to the format.

Find solution for Open Arms rescue ship's immediate landing, says EC

BRUSSELS, Aug 19 (NNN-BERNAMA-ANSA) — European Commission spokeswoman Natasha Bertaud called Monday for a solution to the two-week Open Arms NGO migrant rescue ship standoff with Italy to enable an immediate landing of the 130 or so migrants.

“We appeal to member States and NGOs to collaborate to find a solution that works and permits an immediate disembarkation of the people on board”, Italian news agency ANSA quoted her saying.

She stressed, however, that the EC does not have competence regarding landing ports.

Russia-EU Trade in Goods: 83 Billion Deficit

BRUSSELS, Aug 6 (NNN-Prensa Latina) At the end of 2018, the European Union (EU) ran a trade deficit with Russia of 83 billion, the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) reported.

As reported by Eurostat, a trade deficit between the two economies has prevailed in the last decade, which was highest in 2011 at âé¬93 bn and lowest at âé¬46 bn.

While the EU exported âé¬85 bn to Russia during the past year, it imported from Russia a total of âé¬168 bn, Eurostat added.

Migration more worrying than climate change for Europeans: survey

06 August 2019; DW: While climate change is growing in the public consciousness, migration is still the major issue for more EU citizens, according to the results of the European Commission's biannual Eurobarometer public opinion survey.

Migration remains the top concern across the European Union, according to an EU public opinion poll, although the importance of climate change is growing.

July 2019 hottest month globally ever recorded: EU

05 August 2019; AFP: July 2019 was the hottest month across the globe ever recorded, according to data released Monday by the European Union's satellite-based Earth observation network.

"While July is usually the warmest month of the year for the globe, according to our data it also was the warmest month recorded globally, by a very small margin," Jean-Noel Thepaut, head of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, said in a statement.
