India: BRD Medical College Gorakhpur fined Rs 5 crore

Gorakhpur (UP), Jan 8 (PTI) National Green Tribunal (NGT) has slapped a fine of Rs 5 crores on BRD Medical college in Gorakhpur for failing to ensure proper disposal of medical waste, said sources in the Pollution Control Board office here.

As per a senior official in the PCB office, a team of NGT had visited the medical college in November and subsequently asked the college to pay Rs 5 crore fine.

India: Mayawati dials Akhilesh about CBI quizzing him

Lucknow, Jan 7 (PTI) Ahead of a formal announcement of a pre-poll alliance, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati dialled Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Akhilesh Yadav and extended her full support to him after reports emerged that he might be quizzed by the CBI in connection with the mining scam.

"Do not be shaken by such gimmicks," Mayawati told Akhilesh, while terming the reports as "political animosity" of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

India: 4 cows, 3 calves die in UP's Banda due to lack of fodder

Banda (UP), Jan 7 (PTI) Four cows and three calves have died apparently due to lack of fodder in Uttar Pradesh's Banda district, locals said Monday.

The incident happened in the district's Gureh village of Sadar area on Sunday.

About 150 cattle were kept in an enclosure by villagers of which seven died due to lack of fodder, Ram Kishore, husband of the village head said.

Sub Divisional Magistrate of Sadar, T Ansaria, said he has no information about cattle "deaths".

India: 3 detained after attempt to shut meat shop

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Jan 8 (PTI) Three people were detained after a group of Hindu activists allegedly tried to force shut a meat shop in a village in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said Tuesday.

The incident occurred in Khampur village of Chapar area on Monday evening. Police rushed to the spot and dispersed the two sides, an officer said.

Three people were taken into custody and later released, the officer added.

India: 91 Tanneries to remain closed till Kumbh

KANPUR: Changing its earlier decision on the tanneries’ operation on the roster basis, the state pollution control board has taken a strict action. The tanneries will now be opened after the Kumbh. Announcing the fresh decision, T U Khan, Board’s chief officer, said that owners of as many as 91 tanneries were made aware of the closure resolution with the state pollution control board.

India: Ready to face CBI: Akhilesh Yadav

Lucknow, Jan 6 (PTI) Amid reports that the CBI is likely to quiz Akhilesh Yadav in the illegal mining case, the Samajwadi Party chief Sunday said he is ready to face the probe agency, but people are also ready to answer the BJP.

Talking to reporters in Lucknow, he said the BJP is leaving a "culture", which may be used against it in the future.

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur student tops CAT

KANPUR: The 22-year-old IIT Kanpur B Tech graduate Rounak Majumdar cracked CAT 2018 examination with a one hundred percentile score. His score was 251.38 out of 300.

Regarding his preparations, he said it was quite clear in his mind that time management and CAT related Skills would hold the key. I learnt how to plan management at IIT Kanpur, he added.

India: Rs 4,300 cr earmarked for creating infra for Kumbh Mela

Chennai, Jan 5 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government has allotted Rs 4,300 crore for creating infrastructure necessary to conduct the Kumbh Mela 2019, scheduled to begin from January 15, the state's Minister of Excise and Prohibition Jai Pratap Singh said here Saturday.

Participating in an event organised by trade body FICCI Tamil Nadu Council, he said, the Prayagraj (Allahabad) has UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage of humanity acknowledgement.

India: BJP MLA, wife booked for alleged real estate fraud

New Delhi, Jan 5 (PTI) The economic offences wing of the Delhi Police has registered an FIR against BJP's Kanpur (Dehat) MLA Vinod Katiyar and his wife for alleged cheating, criminal breach of trust and duping of real estate customers of crores of rupees, officials said Saturday.

Katiyar is also a director of the AVP Buildetch, Noida, they said.
