India: Open Internet more at risk now than ever before: Twitter

New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) Amid raging debate globally over social media regulation and controls, microblogging platform Twitter on Tuesday cautioned that 'Open Internet' is more at risk now than ever before, and asserted the need for coordinated, multi-stakeholder strategy to defend free, secure, and global open internet.

In its position paper on 'Protecting the Open Internet', Twitter said governments that seek to defend and expand online freedom cannot stand by while other countries seek to silence critics, censor journalists, and block access to information.

India: Avesh Khan set to join Team India as net bowler

New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) Delhi Capitals speedster Avesh Khan has been asked by the BCCI to stay back in the UAE after the IPL to join India's T20 World Cup squad as a net bowler.

The 24-year-old is the second fast bowler, after Kashmiri pace sensation Umran Malik, who has been asked to join the team and if BCCI sources are to be believed, the lanky fast bowler could well make it to the standby list by the time World Cup starts on Sunday. India will open their campaign on October 24 against Pakistan.

Indian Rupee slides by 37 paise to 15-month low of 75.36 against US$

Mumbai, Oct 11 (PTI) The rupee slid by 37 paise to close at a 15-month low of 75.36 against the US dollar on Monday as crude oil zoomed towards seven-year high and the greenback hardened in the overseas markets.

The Indian currency for the first time this year settled below the 75 level as fears of high import bill due to costlier crude oil and forex outflows due to firming US bond yields weighed on the local unit. The rupee had fallen by 20 paise to end at 74.99 on Friday.

Relentless loot of India's national assets: Yechury

New Delhi, Oct 11 (PTI) The CPI(M) on Monday hit out at the government over the sale of Air India to the Tatas, claiming that it was a "gift" to the group from the Centre and a "daylight highway robbery" of national assets.

Addressing a press conference here, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury alleged that the airline's burden of Rs 46,262 crore will be left with the people of the country.

India: Amit Shah holds meet with power, coal ministers

New Delhi, Oct 11 (PTI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday held a meeting with Power Minister R K Singh and Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi amid reports of the ongoing coal shortage in the country, officials said.

During the hour-long meeting, the three ministers were believed to have discussed the availability of coal to power plants and the current power demands.

India: SDMC bans cross-gender massage at spa, massage centres

New Delhi, Oct 11 (PTI) The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has implemented a new license policy for spa and massage centres under which cross-gender massage will not be allowed in such facilities, the civic body said in a statement on Monday.

According to the statement, the civic agency has framed and implemented general and technical guidelines in connection with issuing licence for spas and massage centres.

India: Mundra port drugs seizure: NIA conducts searches in NCR

New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday raided multiple locations in the National Capital Region in connection with its probe related to the recent seizure of 2,988 kg of heroin at Gujarat's Mundra port, an official said.

The searches are being carried out at five locations in Delhi and Noida.

India: NTPC has halved power supply to Delhi due to coal crises

New Delhi, Oct 11 (PTI) The Delhi government has to depend on costly gas- based power as well as spot purchase at high market rate as the NTPC has halved power supply to the city from the usual 4000 MW, Delhi Power Minister Satyendar Jain said on Monday.

Most of the National Thermal Power Corporation(NTPC) plants are running at 55 percent capacity as their coal stocks are enough for one-two days, he claimed.

Delhi purchases most of its power from NTPC but supply has been halved, Jain told reporters.
