India: BJP MP Varun Gandhi demands guaranteed MSP for farmers

New Delhi, Oct 29 (PTI) Launching an attack on the Uttar Pradesh government over the issues of farmers, BJP MP Varun Gandhi alleged on Friday that "crippling corruption" in procurement centres is completely out in the open and that they are forced to sell their grains to middlemen.

India: Delhi Police starts removing barricades at Tikri border put up to stop farmers

New Delhi, Oct 28 (PTI) The Delhi Police on Thursday began removing barricades put up at the Tikri border where thousands of farmers are protesting against the Centre's three agri laws, a senior officer said.

Four out of the eight layers of barricades at Tikri border have been removed. However, the cement barricades are still there and the road remains closed for commuters, the officer said.

Thousands of farmers have been protesting at the three borders of the national capital against the contentious farm laws since November last year.

India: Four-month-old girl rescued, was sold by father

New Delhi, Oct 28 (PTI) The Delhi Commission for Women has rescued a four-month-old girl, who was allegedly sold by her father when she was only six-day-old, according to a statement.

The commission's mahila panchayat office at Shahbad Dairy received a complaint from an anonymous source on October 21 that a man had sold his girl child.

The commission immediately formed a team and contacted the Delhi Police.

A team of the DCW, along with the Delhi Police, then approached the girl's mother who lives with her parents.

India: Decline in performance of Delhi councillors: NGO report

New Delhi, Oct 28 (PTI) Ahead of the civic body elections early next year, NGO Praja Foundation has ranked Delhi's sitting councillors and released a consolidated report on Thursday, claiming a decline in their overall performance.

There are 265 councillors in the North, East and South Delhi Municipal Corporations.

The NGO said none of them scored Grade A.

All these three civic bodies are ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is the principal opposition.

India: RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das gets 3-year extension

New Delhi, Oct 29 (PTI) The government has extended the term of Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das by another three years up to December 2024, according to an official order.

Das was appointed the RBI's 25th governor on December 11, 2018 for a period of three years after the abrupt resignation of his predecessor Urjit Patel.

An official order dated October 28, said that the government has reappointed Das as the Governor of the central bank for a period of three years beyond December 10, 2021.

India: Govt approves 8.5 pc interest rate on EPF for FY'21

New Delhi, Oct 29 (PTI) The government has approved 8.5 per cent rate of interest on employees' provident fund for the 2020-21 fiscal, a source said.

Just ahead of Diwali, this is a good news for over five crore subscribers of the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).

The 8.5 per cent rate of interest on provident fund deposits for the last financial year was decided by the EPFO's apex decision making body Central Board of Trustees (CBT) headed by Labour Minister in March this year.

India criticises China for new land border law

New Delhi, Oct 27 (PTI) India on Wednesday hit out at China for its "unilateral" decision to bring about a new land border law and said it is a matter of concern as the legislation can have implications on the existing bilateral pacts on border management and on the overall boundary question.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said India expects that China will avoid undertaking action under the pretext of the law that could unilaterally alter the situation in the India-China border areas.

India ranked 9th in VC funding for climate tech: Report

New Delhi, Oct 26 (PTI) India ranks at the ninth spot globally for climate tech investment, with the country's climate tech firms receiving USD 1 billion in venture capital funding between 2016 and 2021, according to a report released on Tuesday.

Venture capital (VC) investment in climate technology companies has gone up globally since 2016, as per the report jointly prepared by international trade promotion agency London & Partners and Amsterdam-based database management company Dealroom.co.
