Delhi air pollution: Schools, colleges to remain shut till further orders

New Delhi, Nov 17 (PTI) The Delhi government has decided to shut schools and other educational institutions, and ban the entry of vehicles from outside, except for essential services, till further orders amid rising pollution levels in the national capital, Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced on Wednesday.

It has also decided to extend work from home for Delhi government employees and the ban on construction and demolition activities till Sunday.

India: TV debates causing more pollution than anybody: Supreme Court

New Delhi, Nov 17 (PTI) Debates on TV news channels are causing more pollution than anybody with statements made in the court being taken out of context, the Supreme Court said on Wednesday.

A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana said everyone has their own agenda and statements are taken out of context in these debates.

India: Collective marriage of over 2,300 couples in UP

Ghaziabad (UP), Nov 15 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday virtually blessed over 2,300 couples on the occasion of collective marriage ceremony held at Kamla Nehru Nagar Ground.

The programme was organised by the "Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board" following the scheme of the state government. In this wedding programme, the daughters of labourers who are registered in the labour department were enrolled, District Magistrate Rakesh Kumar Singh told PTI.

India: IREO's Lalit Goyal arrested by ED

New Delhi, Nov 16 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested the vice chairman and managing director of real estate group IREO, Lalit Goyal, in connection with a money laundering probe against him, officials said on Tuesday.

The businessman has been taken into custody under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) by the federal probe agency in Chandigarh and will be produced before a local court for seeking his remand, they said.

India: JNU sees fresh clashes between ABVP-left student parties

New Delhi, Nov 15 (PTI) Members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-affiliated ABVP and the JNUSU allegedly got into an argument over organising a programme at the student union hall in Jawaharlal Nehru University campus here, police said on Monday.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) accused each other of attacking their members and injuring other students on Sunday night.

An FIR has not been registered yet, police said.

Indian Army Chief Gen Naravane leaves for Israel on 5-day visit

New Delhi, Nov 14 (PTI) Army Chief General MM Naravane on Sunday left for Israel on a five-day visit to further strengthen India's defence and security cooperation with the Jewish state.

The visit by the Army chief comes weeks after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar travelled to Israel to explore ways to boost strategic ties.

In August, then air chief marshal R K S Bhadauria had also travelled to Israel.

US congressional delegation meets Modi

New Delhi, Nov 13 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with a delegation of US lawmakers on Saturday, during which he appreciated the consistent support and constructive role of the US Congress in deepening the India-US comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared democratic values.

In a statement, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said the US congressional delegation was led by Senator John Cornyn and included senators Michael Crapo, Thomas Tuberville and Michael Lee, and Congress members Tony Gonzales and John Kevin Elizey.

India: Opportunities for Korean firms in India's startup ecosystem: Goyal

New Delhi, Nov 12 (PTI) Huge opportunities exist for Korean investors in India's startup ecosystem and both the countries need to increase collaboration in sectors such as automobile, textiles, food processing, and chemicals to enhance economic ties, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday.

The minister also invited Korean businesses to invest in India.

India: Space ecosystem rife for private players: ISRO chief

New Delhi, Nov 11 (PTI) Noting that the space ecosystem was rife with opportunities for private players, ISRO Chairman K Sivan on Thursday said operational space activities of the organisation will be open for the private industry to take up and commercially benefit from it.

At the same time, for sustaining the existing capabilities of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the New Space India Limited will play an enhanced role in meeting user-driven demands, he said, addressing the Times Now Summit 2021.

India: Congress demands JPC probe in Rafale aircraft corruption

Mumbai, Nov 11 (PTI) The Congress on Thursday demanded that the Rafale aircraft deal with France be thoroughly investigated by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) immediately.

The remarks came days after French investigative portal Mediapart, in fresh revelations, alleged bogus invoices were used that enabled French aircraft maker Dassault Aviation to pay at least 7.5 million euros in secret commissions to a middleman to help it secure the Rafale deal with India.
