Indian Railways runs Shramik Special trains to ferry migrants home

New Delhi, May 2 (PTI) The railways on Saturday ran 10 trains to ferry home to Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar nearly 10,000 migrants from eight states, a senior official said.

He said the trains were planned on the request of these eight states -- Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Kerala, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

India: 5,105 prisoners released on bail in Maharashtra

Mumbai, May 2 (PTI) The prisons department of Maharashtra has released more than 5,000 inmates from various prisons of the state till Saturday, an official said.

To prevent the spread of coronavirus infection in overcrowded jails, the prisons department is releasing those inmates who are serving sentences of less than seven years on bail, he said.

India: Role of Tablighi Jamaat was most condemnable: Adityanath

Lucknow, May 2 (PTI) Holding the Tablighi Jamaat responsible for the spread of COVID-19, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said that being infected with a virus is not a crime but to hide it is definitely a crime.

Speaking at a programme of a news channel, Adityanath said, "The role of Tablighi Jamaat was most condemnable. To get a disease is not a crime but to hide a disease which is infectious is definitely a crime. And this crime has been done by those associated with the Tablighi Jamaat."

Chandigarh, May 2 (PTI) Industry in Punjab fears "exodus" of migrant workers from the state after the Centre allowed stranded labourers to move back to their respective places.

Industry representatives are concerned over resumption of units if labourers go back to their native places.

India: SC grants protection to lawyer Prashant Bhushan against coercive action in a case

New Delhi, May 1 (PTI) The Supreme Court Friday granted protection to activist lawyer Prashant Bhushan from any coercive action in an FIR lodged against him at Rajkot in Gujarat for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of the Hindus.

The FIR was lodged by former Army personnel Jaidev Rajnikant Joshi at Rajkot alleging that Bhushan hurt religious sentiments of Hindus by tweeting against re-telecast of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata serials on DD during the coronavirus lockdown in the country.

India: Ensure UP borders are sealed to stop entry of 'coronavirus carriers': Adityanath

Lucknow, May 1 (PTI) Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday asked officials to ensure that Uttar Pradesh's borders remain sealed so that people who maybe "coronavirus carriers" cannot enter the state.

He gave the directions at a review meeting.

India: Bihar braces for massive influx of migrants; Nitish asks officials to pull up their socks

Patna, May 2 (PTI) A massive influx of migrant workers is expected in Bihar in the near future and arrangements must be in place for their mandatory 21-day quarantine, medical tests, treatment and economic rehabilitation, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has said.

At a marathon meeting here on Friday which lasted for close to six hours, Kumar asked officials to pull up their socks as the migrants, students and pilgrims, said to be in millions, seem poised to return home in droves on board special trains run by the Centre.
