Indian agency raids home of journalist, activists in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — India’s premier investigating agency on Wednesday said it raided 10 locations in Indian-controlled Kashmir, including the offices and residences of a journalist and two prominent activists, triggering concerns of a crackdown on information and a free press in the disputed region.

India’s coronavirus cases cross 8 million, behind US

NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s confirmed coronavirus caseload surpassed 8 million on Thursday with daily infections dipping to the lowest level this week, as concerns grew over a major Hindu festival season and winter setting in.

India’s trajectory is moving toward the worst-hit country, the United States, which has over 8.8 million cases.

The Health Ministry reported another 49,881 infections and 517 fatalities in the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 120,527.

India: Parliamentary panel slams Twitter in China map dispute

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The head of an Indian parliamentary panel accused Twitter of disrespecting New Delhi’s sovereignty on Wednesday, after mapping data showed Indian-ruled territory as part of China in what the social network said was a quickly resolved mistake.

Twitter executives appeared before the Joint Committee on the Personal Data Protection Bill to explain the error that came to light last week and which the company said had since been resolved.

India: Ambedkar's statue found damaged in UP

Ballia (UP), Oct 28 (PTI) A statue of Dalit icon B R Ambedkar was found vandalised in Kotiya village under the Nagara Police Station area here, police said on Wednesday.

The villagers found the damaged statue, which was installed on the side of the village road, on Tuesday night, Yadvendra Pande, SHO, Nagara said.

Senior police officials reached the spot and pacified the people with an assurance that a new statue of the esteemed personality will be installed soon.

India: NDA is national destruction alliance : Brinda Karat

Patna, Oct 27 (PTI) Senior CPI-M leader Brinda Karat Tuesday termed the BJP-led NDA as the national destruction alliance and said that migrant workers from Bihar have been the worst victims of its policies.

Addressing a press conference here, Karat asserted that the opposition Grand Alliance in Bihar, which her party joined less than two months ago, is headed for a landslide win in the state assembly polls whose first phase is slated for Wednesday.

India: 4 held for stealing onions worth Rs 2.30 lakh

Pune, Oct 27 (PTI) Amid soaring prices, four people were arrested for allegedly stealing onions worth Rs 2.30 lakh in Junnar in Maharashtra's Pune district, police said on Tuesday.

The theft of 56 bags of the kitchen staple took place in Dingore village and the arrests were made on the basis of CCTV camera footage and leads, a Junnar police station official said.

India: 121 polluting units demolished in Ghaziabad since Oct 15

Ghaziabad, Oct 27 (PTI) A total of 121 polluting factories have been razed in Ghaziabad's Loni town since October 15, with a dozen units being demolished on Tuesday, District Magistrate Ajay Shankar Pandey said.

To contain air pollution, the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) has been implemented in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) from October 15.

Pandey told PTI that the district administration is taking all steps to curb air pollution, with polluting units being demolished and hefty fines being imposed on violators.

India: Polling begin in first phase of Bihar elections in 71 constituencies, 1,066 candidates in fray

Patna, Oct 28 (PTI) Polling began Wednesday morning in 71 assembly constituencies of Bihar in the first phase of three-phase elections amid tight security and COVID-19 guidelines in place.

Of the total 2,14,84,787 electors eligible to exercise the franchise, 1,12,76,396 are male voters, 1,01,29,101 are female electors and 599 are in third gender category, according to data provided by the Election Commission

There are 78,691 service electors
