India: Ensure no safe havens anywhere for those who betray India: PM Modi to CVC, CBI

Kevadia, Oct 20 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday directed officials of the Central Vigilance Commission and the Central Bureau of Investigation to ensure there are no safe havens anywhere in the world for those who betray the country.

Virtually addressing a joint conference of the CVC and the CBI at Kevadia in Gujarat, Modi said no matter how powerful a person may be, stern action should be taken against those who work against the interest of the nation or its people.

India: Drug to treat dengue has been developed, claims CDRI

Kanpur: Central Drug Research Institute (CSIR-CDRI) scientists have claimed to have developed a medicine to treat dengue.

Produced from plants, the medicine, called AQCH, is anti-viral in nature. It was tested successfully in labs and on mice.

City's Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College, and the medical Colleges in Lucknow and Agra will conduct the trial of this drug.

A total of 100 patients at each centre will receive treatment with this new drug.

India: IIT-K to launch its second heritage olympiad on Nov 14

Kanpur: The Start-up Innovation and Incubation Centre (SIIC), an IIT-Kanpur incubatee, will launch its second edition of the Heritage Olympiad, Cultre, on November 14.

The second edition of this Olympiad will focus on imparting a preliminary understanding of the Indian heritage and how traditions are created and passed on to the generations ahead.

"SIIC has had a history of creating, supporting, and promoting technology and knowledge intensive innovations that uphold the Indian heritage," said Abhay Karandikar, director, IIT-K.

Wave of killings triggers memories of dark past in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — The Kashmiri Hindu activist was listening to religious hymns on his cellphone when he was interrupted by a tragic WhatsApp message. It brought news of a fatal shooting of a prominent chemist from his community, just a few miles from the activist’s home in Srinagar, the largest city in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Sanjay Tickoo, 54, anxiously bolted the gate of his house and gathered his family in the dining room. His phone kept buzzing with calls from frightened minority community members.

India: Decomposed bodies found in UP's Kanpur village paddy field

Kanpur: Decomposed bodies of a missing 22-year-old youth and his 16-year-old alleged girlfriend, have been found in a paddy field in the outskirts of the village in Kanpur district. Both of them belonged to the Unnao district.

The bodies of the victims, identified as Balkishan and the alleged girlfriend, were at least four to five days old, according to the police.

The identity of the victims will be further ascertained through DNA profiling.

The police said that it appears that the bodies of the couple were burnt by pouring acid.

Floods Hit India’s Uttarakhand State, Five Dead

NEW DELHI, Oct 19 (NNN-PTI) – Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, today spoke to the northern state Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, over phone, on the situation in the hilly state, following incessant rains and floods over the past few days.

According to media reports, at least five people died in the state during the past 24 hours. Many parts of the state remain cut off, with main highways and roads washed away by gushing waters.

Trains obstructed in north India due to farmers protest

NEW DELHI, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- The movement of many trains was affected in some places in northern India on Monday by thousands of protesting farmers.

According to media reports, several groups of farmers blocked train tracks in areas in the northern states of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

The protesters demanded the dismissal and arrest of junior federal minister Ajay Mishra over his son Ashish Mishra's car allegedly running over a group of protesters in Uttar Pradesh earlier this month.

India: Cases of perforated intestine reported in Kanpur

Kanpur: At least two cases from UP's Kanpur have demonstrated cases of perforated intestine.

A 7-year-old Priya from Kanpur was suffering from extensive diarrhoea. Parents approached the private hospital here.

The child was given Lomotil to stop diarrhoea.

Thereafter the child suffered acute constipation and acute loss of appetite.

Parents again went to the same hospital where the paediatrician after doing an Ultrasound informed them that their child was suffering from a hole in the intestine.

India: CRPF jawan found dead in J-K's Ramban

Banihal/Jammu, Oct 19 (PTI) The body of a CRPF jawan bearing a gunshot wound was found in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district on Tuesday morning, official sources said.

Constable Rajeev Ranjan was found dead at the 84th Battalion camp in the Boom Chanderkoot area of the district around 8.40 am, they said.

As per the sources, Ranjan, who was from Bihar's Chhapra district, allegedly shot himself with his service rifle.

Inquest proceedings have been initiated by police under section 174 of the CrPC, they said.

India: Exports up 40.5 pc to USD 15.13 bn during Oct 1-14

New Delhi, Oct 18 (PTI) The country's exports rose by 40.5 per cent to USD 15.13 billion during October 1-14 on account of healthy performance by key sectors such as petroleum products, engineering and chemicals, according to preliminary data of the commerce ministry.

Imports during the period grew by 60.72 per cent to USD 14.82 billion, the data showed.
