Africa CDC calls for enhanced Ebola virus surveillance, control measures in Uganda

ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union (AU), has called on Ugandan authorities to intensify surveillance and control measures as the country reported an outbreak of the Ebola virus disease.

The Africa CDC made the call after Uganda on Tuesday declared an Ebola virus disease outbreak in Mubende district in the central part of the country, following a confirmed case in Mubende regional referral hospital.

Update: Seven killed in Tigray airstrike, Ethiopia denies targeting civilians

ADDIS ABABA, Aug 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — An air strike on a children’s play area killed at least seven people in the capital of Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region on Friday, medical officials there said, the first such attack after a four-month old ceasefire collapsed this week.

The officials said three children were among the dead but a a federal government spokesman denied any civilian casualties.

Ethiopia announces completion of third filling of mega-dam

ADDIS ABABA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia announced the successful completion of the third filling of its mega-dam on the Blue Nile.

"It is with great pleasure, I announce the successful completion of the third filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)," said Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Friday during a program at the dam site.

The announcement came a day after the East African nation launched electricity generation from the second turbine of the mega-dam.

Ethiopia completes third phase of filling giant Nile dam

ADDIS ABABA, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Ethiopia has completed the third phase of filling the reservoir for its huge dam on the Blue Nile river, the government said on Friday, a process that continues to irk the country's downstream neighbours Egypt and Sudan.

Addis Ababa says the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a $4 billion hydropower project, is crucial to powering its economic development, but Egypt and Sudan consider it a serious threat to their vital water supplies.

Ethiopia says African Union's mediation only avenue for talks with Tigray rebels

11 August 2022; MEMO: Ethiopia said on Thursday that no "parallel" effort would be pursued for talks with Tigray rebels other than the mediation by the African Union with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo as the facilitator, Anadolu Agency reports.

Addressing a weekly press briefing, Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Meles Alem reiterated Ethiopia's stand to engage in talks with the Tigray rebels without any precondition.

African Union head condemns Israeli ‘attacks’ in Gaza

ADDIS ABABA, Aug 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The chairman of the African Union commission condemned Israeli “air strike attacks” in the Gaza Strip as violence escalates in the troubled region, with 41 Palestinians reported dead.

“Moussa Faki Mahamat strongly condemns the continued air strike attacks by Israel on Gaza that have killed more than 41 Palestinian civilians, including 15 children and four women, and 311 have been injured,” an AU statement said.

African Union: Targeting of civilians stark violation of international law

08 August 2022; MEMO: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, yesterday criticised the Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip, saying that targeting civilians is a "stark violation of international law."

"The targeting of civilians and the continued illegal occupation by Israeli security forces of the occupied territories, are in stark violation of international law, and complicate the search for a just and lasting solution," Faki Mahamat said in a statement.

Lavrov arrives in Ethiopia, last leg of his tour of Africa

ADDIS ABABA, July 26. /TASS/: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived on Tuesday in Ethiopia on a working visit, TASS reports from the site.

On Wednesday, Lavrov is expected to hold talks with his Ethiopian counterpart Demeke Mekonnen.

The top diplomat visits Ethiopia on the last leg of his tour of Africa. From Ethiopia, he will travel to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s Council of Foreign Ministers.

Ethiopian police forces kill over 100 Al-Shabab fighters

ADDIS ABABA, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Ethiopia's Somali region announced that they have killed more than 100 Al-Shabab fighters during a failed incursion from neighboring Somalia by the militant group.

In a press statement released on Saturday evening, the Somali Region Communication Bureau said the Al-Shabab fighters were killed earlier this week during a security operation led by the region's special police forces that lasted for three days.
