UNICEF faces funding gap to meet needs of 9.9 mln people in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, May 2 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) on Monday disclosed it has only received 22 percent of the 351 million U.S. dollars it requires to meet the needs of 9.9 million people in Ethiopia.

In a Humanitarian Situation report it published, UNICEF stated it needs the funds to meet the needs of 9.9 million people impacted by drought conditions in four regions of Ethiopia.

The UNICEF funding appeal to Ethiopia also includes funds needed to help 4.45 million children in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia: AU congratulates Macron on re-election as French President

ADDIS ABABA, April 25 (Xinhua) -- The African Union on Monday sent a congratulatory message to Emmanuel Macron on his re-election as French President.

"I extend my warm congratulations to President Emmanuel Macron on his re-election," AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat tweeted.

"I'm happy to continue our commitment with him to build renewed and mutually beneficial relations between Africa and France and more broadly with Europe," Mahamat said.

Report: Hunger kills hundreds of kids in Ethiopia’s Tigray

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — At least 1,900 children under 5 have died from malnutrition in Ethiopia’s embattled Tigray region in the past year, according to a study conducted by regional health officials and seen by The Associated Press.

The deaths were recorded at health facilities across Tigray between June last year and April 1. Western Tigray, which is under the control of forces from the neighboring Amhara region, was not included in the survey.

Africa CDC chief warns Africa to adhere to strict COVID-19 prevention despite decreasing new infections

ADDIS ABABA, April 17 (Xinhua) -- The Director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) John Nkengasong has warned African countries to follow strict COVID-19 prevention measures despite the current decrease in the number of new infections.

Ethiopia repatriates 100 children from Saudi Arabia

ADDIS ABABA, April 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Ethiopia repatriated 101 children from Saudi Arabia on Friday as it continued a campaign to return tens of thousands of its nationals from the country.

Many of the Ethiopians from the Middle Eastern country are undocumented migrant workers who have been detained in squalid conditions.

More than a week since the drive began close to 5,000 migrant workers have been returned, according to a statement from Ethiopia’s women and social affairs ministry.

Ethiopia releases former Tigray government officials - lawyer

ADDIS ABABA, March 29 (Reuters) - Ethiopia has released several former government officials from prison, a lawyer working with them said. The group of ethnic Tigrayans included former members of the government-appointed administration and a member of the ruling party.

The state-appointed Ethiopian Human Rights Commission said on March 18 that at least eight officials had been arrested, but gave no names, or reasons for the arrests. 

Ethiopia government declares unilateral truce to allow aid into Tigray

ADDIS ABABA, March 24 (Reuters) - Ethiopia's government on Thursday declared an immediate, unilateral truce in its conflict with rebellious Tigrayan forces to allow aid into the war-ravaged northern province.

A spokesman for the Tigrayan forces did not respond to a request for comment on the announcement, which follows a visit by the U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, David Satterfield, to the capital Addis Ababa this week.

Ethiopia establishes committee to repatriate nationals from Saudi Arabia

ADDIS ABABA, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia has established a national committee to repatriate hundreds of thousands of nationals currently residing in Saudi Arabia, an Ethiopian official said on Saturday.

Dina Mufti, Spokesman, Ethiopia Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said a national committee headed by Demeke Mekonen, Ethiopia Deputy Prime Minister and acting Foreign Minister, has been established to repatriate and rehabilitate citizens living in difficult conditions in the middle eastern country, reported state media outlet Ethiopia Broadcasting Corporation.

Africa's COVID-19 cases surpass 11.22 mln: Africa CDC

ADDIS ABABA, March 6 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa has reached 11,220,954 as of Saturday evening, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union, said the death toll from the pandemic across the continent stands at 249,536. Some 10,466,353 patients across the continent have recovered from the disease so far.

Ethiopia turns on the turbines at giant Nile hydropower plant

20 Feb 2022; MEMO: Ethiopia began producing electricity on Sunday from its Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a multi-billion-dollar hydropower plant on the River Nile that neighbours Sudan and Egypt have worried will cause water shortages downstream, Reuters reports.

After flicking a digital switch to turn on the turbines in the first phase of the project, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sought to assure those nations that his country did not wish to harm their interests.
